740iL Engine knock/noise

MY 2000 740iL has the M62 engine with the Vanos system. Engine runs fine and smooth with 110,000 miles. But when cold at first start it is normal: smooth and quiet. But once it warms up you can hear a slight knocking noise as if the there were a cam/lifter problem or maybe a wrist pin problem (engine still runs smooth). I have readjusted the Vanos timing/settings and even replaced the driver's side vanos unit but the knocking noise persists, but only when warm. Does anyoine have any thoughts or insights?

The 7 Series board is a lonely place... Try the N55 board in the E90 3 Series section since the engines are largely the same and there is a lot of knowledge on there!
