New NY Window Tint Regulations!?

Note the following:

http://abc7ny.com/politics/mayor-pol...lives/1621088/

Current NY window tint law requires the front two side windows to allow 70% of light through, but some articles regarding the new regulations reference that windows must not be tinted darker than 30%.

Please tell me the articles truly mean 30% and are not getting confused with the law requiring at least 70% of the light to pass.

Anyone able to find a copy of the proposed law?

Thanks.

Found the Bill: http://nyassembly.gov/leg/?default_f...&Memo=Y&Text=Y

Unfortunately, seems that windows allowing less than 70% of light through will fail inspection.

As I said on another forum, this is to protect police officers approaching blacked out cars. That is unfortunate and I am not thrilled with it but can understand the concern, and if I were a police officer or had one in my family, I would feel that the safety issue outweighed the cosmetics for car owners. I say cosmetics because 70% transmission tint can protect against UV and heat.

Thanks, but would suck if this passes. There's certainly levels of tint darker than 70% that would balance officer safety with vehicle privacy, 50% being reasonable, no?

I don't know enough to say. Contact your legislator. I have had 3M crystalline that is 70% and works well for heat/UV.

Instead of this, the law should be that when pulled over, you have to turn on your emergency hazard lights, shut down your engine and roll down all windows, weather permitting; it’s what I do, and instruction to do so can be conveyed by the officer to the driver via loudspeaker, need be. I’m likely asking for too much though, and the people this Bill is to protect against wouldn't follow same anyway.

In a perfect world, where people follow law enforcement's instructions this would work. But we all know the reality. I go home every night to NYPD. It is heartbreaking and down right terrifying what they face out there lately. I think lighter tint is the least that can be done to keep them safe.

Understood, and thank you for your family's service.

Must be horrible to need to approach a dark tinted car.

Too bad the Bill couldn't have settled on 50%; light enough to see in.

Lets see what happens with the Bill.

Thank you again.
