I'm sure Lexus is working on the "issue" and if BMW has a similar issue, I'm sure they will respond accordingly...

More ratio's in the same size and weight package is defiantly a plus in these days of never ending fuel price hikes...

I think you guys dont really know what you talking about because this seems to be a kind of new type of transmission and chances are you won't really even know which gear is known, it will be that smooth. The point of it is obviously to make the car more economical while also quick. Since I am like totally not the 7 series buyer, I don't really get bothered about it at all.

Mercs have 7 gears now, but seems to be ok. who cares!

Listen, I know what I'm talking about. I know what demographic these cars are aimed at, and what they are trying to provide: luxury and comfort. However, BMW has and will probably still advertise the 7 series as being dynamically capable. Having an 8spd transmission could hurt this potential. That's the problem I found with the current 7 series. Honestly I don't think it holds a candle to the S class and it just hangs with the A8 in terms of luxury, yet its saving grace seems to be its dynamic edge according to magazines and other various reviews.

some guy came to a meet in philly with his '99 7 series with a manual 6 speed in it. that rocked. so maybe he will convert this one as well. its like a 18 wheeler that has like 15+ gears.

+1....I like the advantages of 8 gears but sometimes, I hate it when my dad's car keeps on searching for the right gear to overtake somebody. It's like your cruising on 75mph in 8th gear, you want to overtake someone, you press the accelerator a little, it moves to 7th, doesn't think its appropriate , moves to 6th, same saga, moves to 5th and, then you go. I just hate the time it takes to find the right gear.

I in no way think more gears are bad but I think, the gearbox should be smart enough to move to 5th or 6th immediately instead of stopping at each gear and checking if it's right or not. I think this can be solved by better programming of the gearbox.
