One thing that hasn't been affected are prices for diesel BMWs. They're still fairly high in terms of resale.

TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. -- The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency said on Tuesday it has approved the sale of new 2017 model year BMW AG diesel vehicles in the United States after a thorough review.

Chris Grundler, head of the EPA's Office of Transportation and Air Quality, told reporters on the sidelines of an automotive conference the agency granted certification to BMW on Friday. BMW had said last month that U.S. product certification of all 2017 BMW diesel models has been delayed due to testing logistics.

"We tested the vehicles every which way from Sunday," Grundler said. "We asked for more data from the company."

In September, the EPA said it would review all U.S. diesel vehicles following an admission from Volkswagen AG that it installed software in cars allowing them to emit up to 40 times legally permissible level of pollution.

Grundler said the agency has not yet approved sale of Daimler AG's 2017 diesel Mercedes-Benz vehicles. "Discussions continue," Grundler said, declining to elaborate on why EPA has not approved certifications for the Mercedes vehicles.

In April, Daimer disclosed the U.S. Justice Department had asked the carmaker to investigate its emissions certification process for vehicles including its Mercedes brand.

Last month, Daimler said EPA and the California Air Resources Board were also conducting inquiries. Daimler said in its earnings release that it could face "delays in obtaining regulatory approvals necessary to introduce new diesel models, which could cause significant collateral damage including reputational harm."

BMW said about 4 percent of U.S. sales last year were diesel models.

VW still hasn't received approval to sell 2016 diesel vehicles in the U.S. and hasn't asked the EPA for permission to sell 2017 diesel models, Grundler said.

perhaps, but if they're not being sold below that of petrol models then there's no net gain in resale value.

I have one of those VW/Audi diesel scandal cars right now...a 2015 A3 TDI. Aside from the terrible seats and seat heaters that reduce output at 10 minutes, it is a phenomenal car. On a flat surface it can get nearly 45 MPG at 90. I've averaged 51 mpg on road trips with average speeds of 68-71 mph. I am going back to BMW with my new 230i this fall, but I would have jumped on a 220d or 225d if offered here. To those who haven't driven the modern diesels, they are just incredible.

We're driving an Audi A4 diesel while on vacation in Europe averaging 4.8l/100km. Quite amazing. It's funny how the EPA does not factor the pollution generated by the disposal of hybrid vehicles' batteries .
Not under WOT but under test cycle conditions.

There is no legal limit for WOT conditions. EVERY diesel engine emits much more than 40 times the legal limit under WOT conditions... Pollution limits is only regulated for the test cycle criterias. Outside of the test cycle conditions there are no specific limits. So the legal limit is based on pollution under a quite mild test cycle which has no WOT scenarios at all. Pollution control can't be turned off and the regulators idea is that this will make sure pollution is limited. Problem is that manufacturers use different strategies, or ethics, outside test cycle operation. German authorities did a huge real world and laboratory test of most diesel cars after the VW scandal. Many manufacturers have a extreme increase in pollution as soon as the car is driven outside the test cycle. Usually due to engine mapping and not caring about pollution outside the official test parametres. While others, incl BMW I believe, have a linear increase in pollution in relation to load on the engine.

But, the VW problem was that some models had as much as a 40 fold increase of NOX pollution under normal conditions, as well as test conditions, when the cheat program wasn't activated.... With the amount of VW diesels sold in Europe, the effects on air quality in cities due to the increased amount of nox above legal limits is actually a real concern and not just a theoretical and legal problem..

In the UK, landed today... Saw over half the BMW's are diesels here... Lots of 1 series 3 and 5 door models. Just passed an X1 d model... Petrol prices are much higher here and diesel is a viable cost option.... Not the 1990's diesels were talking about!

As an American moving to Europe four years ago, I couldn't wait to get a 1 series hatch w a Diesel engine. 118d is primarily my wife's car but we love it. Fun to drive rwd vehicle with good fuel economy...and I can still turn off TC..

I'm sure someone knows the answer to this, I don't.... But what is the difference of the environmental impact of the extra refinement needed to get the oil to petrol versus diesel versus the emissions difference of the two?

That said unless you are powering your Tesla off of a solar or other natural energy source how would that stack up? And knowing how Lithium is sourced and transported the process has an impact... Nothing's perfect - some are better than others.

I'm not a specialist in the domain but from what I heard it take more or less the same energy to create diesel than gas. When they heat up the crude oil to separate it the diesel end up lower due to the heavier weight of it. Gasoline range between sg 0.70-0.74, and diesel sg 0.80-0.84. The sulfur level in the diesel is critical. It generally take more care to carry diesel than gasoline due to the sensitivity of the Flash point which is around 60c on diesel versus -40c on gas.

Id guess that 85% + of BMWs here in the uk are diesels. I've seen a couple of 328i one 528i a handful of 335i and M135i and a few M4s and M5s in past year

See literally hundreds of 520d 320d 120d 116d 118d 420d on the roads. The police have 330d and 530d everywhere. A few folk have 435d and 335d but not as many as I expected. This is without mentioning the X5 30d that seems to have been breeding like rabbits over past few years

The U.K. Is addicted to diesel at present but I suspect the London mayor will start to make life difficult for diesels in the next 5-10 years
