I hope so.

My bet is that this is largely the Gran Coupe finally picking up steam - there has never been a GC before to bolster the numbers like this. And since it is priced only marginally above the 3 Series sedan (cheaper than the proper coupe, in fact), unlike the 6GC compared to the 5 Series sedan, it makes sense that it will begin to steal sales away from that model.

I also don't recall them splitting apart 3 and 4 series sales figures in the past. I suspect they've begun that practice at this time to demonstrate the growth of the latter, even as it also shows the decline for the former.
I completely overlooked the 4GC being included in those numbers. BMW has me thinking 4-series = 2-doors. Wrong! I can definitely see why the 4GC would be a strong seller. It's the best looking (affordable) sedan in BMW's line up. The 6GC is gorgeous, but seriously, $80k starting price?

In time, the gap will likely widen much more. The 4 door might not be very "mini" but people just want a trendy small-ish car with the most utility possible. The success of the Countryman is due to similar reasons.

I am curious how the new Clubman will sell too, now that it has four passenger doors. I think the hinged rear cargo doors with pillar in the rear window might keep this from being as widely accepted as it may otherwise have been. But I still suspect it will increase sales by 50% or more compared to the old model.
I had a 2009 Clubman S and it was definitely quirky, ended up just not quite big enough so we went with an X1. The new Clubman looks like a station wagon which isn't bad in my mind. I wish you could get all wheel drive with it because I just couldn't stand the torque steer the last one had. Make a sharp right hand turn to get on a road in a hurry and you were risking your life to get any traction.

BMW grew 6.5%, in June month to month vs. 6.2% from Merc.

Traditionally BMW always finishes strong in Q4 which is when the sales crown will be decided.

I agree.. the 6 series GC is the best damn looking vehicle in the lineup. The 4 Series GC is also a very nice looking car... although you almost have to have it side by side with the 3 series to see the difference..

Clearly.. BMW AG needs to bring out a 2 series gran coupe... but the question is... when and where to/produce it... ?

Math check:

Cooper /S Hardtop 4DR from 0 to 1886 units is 0% not 100%. So it's a decline of -126.6% not gain of 14.6%.

It looks like the winners are the 2 and 4 series- I think the 320 has diluted the 3 series to a degree. I know that in Europe they offer many more engine choices and it doesn't dilute the model- but the USA is a different market. A 3 series is going through a midlife crisis- kinda round in the middle showing it still can dance but the competition is tougher- new A4 while a bit sterile beats the 3 (4) for interior look/feel and nav. and the C series even with its ugly rear end and tacked on Ipad look, has enough other stuff to give the 3 a real difficult time. But the 4 series just seems fresh and is even better for BMW as the prices are a bit higher than the 3. But looks like a runaway hit for BMW and will absorb some of the loss in 3 series.

BMW isn't losing 3 series sales to C class or A4, it lost sales to the 4er, it's pretty clear many pre-4er 3 series buyers would have bought the 4 had it been available. 3er coupe sales have always been way stronger ratio to sedan wise than the c class or A4/5.

The net gain or loss is compared cumulatively with all vehicles. For fraction purposes, the 1886 goes in the numerator for vehicles sold this year, and 0 goes in the denominator for vehicles sold prior quarter or prior year end quarter.

I do think the 4 and 4GC are stealing marketshare, but the A4 is still doing formidably well, considering it's at the end of it's lifespan. I'm curious to see how the modestly improved F30 LCI stacks up against the brand new A4. Hopefully BMW offers some nice incentives to keep it's growth up with Audi's.

I test drove the new m4, and the new 335i. they both feel nothing like what bmw use to be like, just felt like I was in a jap car. they are trying to cut corners and sell more cars. that's all. don't make me start on the interior

after 335i that I own, I will not be coming back to a bmw. they have totally lost it interms of design - driveability

heck, ill just wait for the new Infiniti coupe
