Bumper Re-Spray cause issues?

My wife was driving her year old Nissan Rogue and was hit from behind leaving very minor damage. We went to a highly rated auto body shop here in San Diego and they put a whole new OEM rear bumper... Today when we went to pick the car up the color was correct but a shade or two lighter than the rest of the car. I refused to take the car and they are going to re-spray it.

My question is: Does re-spraying the bumer cause the paint to be too thick? Would it be more likely to crack or wear sooner if it is re-sprayed?

Thanks for any answers, im just pretty annoyed at the whole thing at this point.

You were right when refused.

Color match must be of 100% except the aged cars that may have natural downgrade of color brightness. Thickness of layer (primer + paint) for all modern cars is 70-140 µm, depending on brand and model (also body part).

For Nissan it is, for example: Almera 100-120 µm, Qashqai 100-130 µm, X-Trail 85-100 µm, Juke 115-130 µm, Teana 120-130 µm. You can google for "Paint meter" or "Paint Thickness Tester" to see how it is measured. This is also a simple way of checking did the car have accidents or it didn't.

It is near impossible to duplicate a factory finish. Even with blending into adjacent panels there is always a slight variation in shades due to the metalic laying down differently on each material ie plastic vs metal. Also take into consideration environmental issues like humidity and air pressure and things of that nature all having an affect.

But then again there is always a possibility they just chose the wrong variation all together and another one might be more suitable and less obvious of a repair.

I just got a call from the shop that the re-spray is done. This was a bit disconcerning since I went by at 10am and they called saying it was remounted and ready for my inspection at 4pm... a total of 6 hrs.

Is it possible to sand, spray, and clearcoat a single rear bumper this quickly? Does this mean they probably baked it to help it dry?

Yes it is possible to do that kinda work in that amount of time but it's not the right way to do it as everything needs to flash in between coats and be dry enough to polish as well. Baking/force drying it only dries the top most layer of clear and the underlying coats still need to gas off and w the amount of materials they've put on this bumper in a short amount of time I'd be Leary of the finish holding up for the life of the vehicle. Might've sprayed it on the car or blended the panels next to it. Either way you should eyeball the shit outta it and be happy in the end.

Probably didn't do the prep work and paint match correctly. After all, it is just a Nissan Rouge, I wouldn't lose sleep over this really...

I actually really like the Rogue.. I mean bang for your buck the wife loves it. Not anywhere near as nice as Could's 6 year old 3 series but nice enough.

Seriously, it is just a cosmetic issue. Whether it is your 5 or my 6 year old 3 or your Rouge, these aren't exactly one off collector cars. Just have them repainted correctly this time... This really isn't worth stressing yourself out about...

Guess people are just super sensitive these days...

The problem usually is the temperature of the parts being painted or the angle how the paint is sprayed or combination of both.
Some colors, typically lighter shades, will not hide and show more.
Also, some colors would look great at day light and very bad at night under neon light especially.
Painting is a craft and one need to be very talented in order to successfully repaint modern cars.
No high tech top of the line gear will compensate for the lack of good paint shooting hand!
I assume they will never get it right as long as they are repainting the bumper only.
They could blend and paint parts of the body for seamless repair.
Yes, every repaint will result in slighly thicker paint layer, especially on plastic parts that will most likely not be sanded down to bare plastic again.
If too thick it will be prone to cracks, yes!
And, no! No "paint meter" could not be used to accurately determine whether car has been repainted as posted above with photos by valbmw.
If they used OEM grade paint and new body parts where little to no bondo is needed the paint thickness would be with in the tolerance.
