Tire Shipping Question through military mail

Has anyone had any experience trying to ship tires through the APO system, and if so, thumbs up/down?

I have the option of sending a replacement set of tires with a supplemental housing shipment that I am due -- but I won't need the tires for at least another year, maybe 18 months -- or eventually I was thinking I would order them from TireRack and ship them through the APO. I have been told the size/weight should not be an issue for APO (these would be 19" OEM sized PS/2s most likely).

I'd prefer to try the APO shipping route down the road bec I'm not keen on having to store the tires that I would ship now for that long (plus there is some slight aging degradation). But if the APO shipping is not recommended, I'd rather do that as the prices on the PS/2s here in France are about $150-200 more per tire.

Hopefully the APO shipping option is feasible (and would welcome any comments from the TireRack folks on this board, I have been a long-time customer incl. the set of winter tires/wheels that I use on the M3).

Thanks

I orderd a set of 4 19" Nitto Invos from Discount Tire Direct via APO, there was a $40 surcharge on shipping for a total of $140 for all 4 tires. Received the tires within 10 days of ordering...very happy with the whole transaction. Some friends of mine have ordered from Tire Rack with similiar rates and turn times...

Tirerack is awsome when of comes to APO shipping. I have spent a total of 7 years in Germany, and ordered brake pads, rotors, and of course tires. Just like the last post above I have always received whatever it was in less then 10 days. I had a buddy order a set of tires on a Thursday afternoon and they were in the mailroom that Monday (which is very impressive for anything going though APO). That was the fastest shipping I have seen from them. Minus paying more for shipping it is worth it and they are very easy to deal with.

I'd just using ship them with my household good because I'm cheap.

What kind of tires are you getting? AAFES might be able to get them depending where you are at.

Just go with tirerack. I shipped wheels and tires through APO with them twice...no problems at all, and quick delivery.

Thanks for the endorsement guys One thing to mention is that you have a choice between Parcel Post Air 1st class and Parcel Post Ground 4th class. The Air is much more reliable as far as delivery time, so we recommend it to anyone who is at all in a hurry.

I used Tirerack for a set tires for a different vehicle with shipping via APO. Completely stress free and easy option! I would have no reservation with going that route again.
