CEL (aka Check Engine Light)...means that something in your emissisons system has created a fault code.

You can use a simple OBD II (generic) code reader to pull the code(s) to see what sensor(s) set the fault code. In most states, stores like AutoZone will read them for free...but I don't think they are allowed to do this in California, so you'll need to use an OBD II reader or software or an app that can pull diagnostic codes.

Or, if your BMW is still under warranty, simply stop by the service department and have them pull the code...again, this is simple hook up to the OBD II port.

There are too many different areas to even guess what may have set the fault...but since your didn't say the light was flashing...it's probably something simple like you gas cap isn't on correctly or there may be an issue with your grill flaps (lots of new BMWs have issues with them getting stuck).

But again, no need to panic yet...just get the codes read...and if you do have an OBD II scanner/reader...pull the code and simply google it. The US mandated OBD II regulations back in 1996...so you have decades of info that a google search can pull up if you type BMW XXXXX (where the 5 Xs = the actual 5 digit code)...or if you have a tool that can pull the BMW specific hex code (6 digits) you can use that too, to search for a possible cause/solution/service plan/etc.

Open one of the owners manuals you have at your service (the digital one embedded in iDrive or the downloadable PDF available from BMW Connected etc) to see why the Check Engine Light illuminates...and you should see that it mentions that it's related to emissions issues.
