The current pre-facelift is at least 8-9 years old compared to the competition for 2026 model years, and the 2027 facelift now is also behind tech wise compared to everything I learned about the new dash and tech in the GLC. I think even the facelift GLS/GLE will have the newer/better tech as the GLC. It’s actually impressive just like the ix3. These two (ix3 and GLC) may not have the nicest layout, but they definitely have an impressive tech and great software implementation for the full-display layout. The mistake that Mbenz did again is that they showed no intention to equip the S-class with the latest and greatest technology, or even a proper dash without gaps. Even the passenger AC vent looks like a last-minute add-on that is physically separated (just like the EQS form 2021, exactly the same), wherein it looks better in the new/similar E-class as it looks integrated all together with the glass without a physical separation. Regardless, even without wood and luxury elements, it’s still better than the previous disappointing ipad layout. I was super excited to learn about the facelift, but it’s still not as good looking as the 7 form outside, and not competitive enough on the tech side either. No automatic doors although the Maybach had it in the rear. They also promised hands-free driving but it doesn’t seem to be available yet on year-1 launch, when the 7 had it now since 2023. Once Mbenz finally adds high-way hands-free via OTA, BMW would have in-town hands-free driving capability in the new 7 just like the current iX3. Just my guess.
Generally speaking, I agree with you, but I think the “piece of crap” comment is a bit too harsh just cause I never sat in the facelift yet, but I’d certainly describe the creaks in the pre-facelift as “a piece of crap”. It’s just like my current GLS, I like the versatility of the GLS, but would agree if anyone describes it as a “piece of crap” given the creaks… it’s the only reason that am trying hard to find something better before I get another GLS. In that case, not many options with similar cabin size (unlikes sedans, most other GLS options are either smaller or much much larger). Curious to know if the facelift s-class will address creaks and how panels are put together, cause that’s the only way I’d forgive them from the “piece of crap” description. Regardless, the boring exterior, and the new dash despite improvements, would still be a problem.

I am not that familiar with Mercedes' portfolio, I don't know all the SUV models, but I think Mercedes invests more in these cars than in the S-Class limousine because it sells more SUVs. The S-Class is selling much worse than expected. Here are a few links. It's not profitable for them to invest in a new dashboard. They decided to save money and moved the dashboard from the 2021 EQS model, which was designed 5 years ago
