There is only one downside. If you use the built in flash on most Nikons at anything less than 40-45mm, the lens obscures a small area which shows up as a semicircular shadow at the bottom of the picture (the lens is quite large even when retracted). I have attached a photo depicting this.

It's a very good lens though. The VR mechanism is amazing when you understand it's workings. Little gyroscopes in the lens detect movement and move one of the lens elements to compensate!! That to me is incredible.
hmm....that shadow's pretty bad...are you SURE that's from the lens and not something overhead? i haven't had that problem...
