Not sure how you'd think that. The 997 to 991 was a big departure in proportions and size. The biggest change since 993 to 996. The 992 is an evolution of the 991; not very different.
Perhaps proportions and size changed but imo the 991 and 997 still look very similar, with the 991 of course representing the more modern evolution. You could park them next to each other and it would be obvious that that were the same model albeit different generations. The 992 though (really the rear is what I am talking about) looks completely different imo. The rear end is much more rounded, the tail lights have a thin bar connecting them, and the Porsche logo is not affixed to the bumper anymore.

I'm honestly surprised you think the 991 looks more different from the 997 than the 992 does to the 991.
