There are Mercedes Benz that are almost 50 years old and they still run today with over 1 or 2 million km on board trouble free, never touching the engine.
An Opel Corsa 1.3 L diesel takes 3 L of diesel for each 100 km (that is 78 mpg).
An Audi A1 1.6 L diesel takes 4-4.5 litres of diesel for each 100 km.
(All examples where in my family in Europe).
Unreliable because of emission system is a story teller for people that have no idea. Diesel runs forever if you take care of it.

It's not the quality of the fuel but the lack of repair expertise combined with the high cost of emissions components (DPF, SCR, EGR).
Older Diesels aren't really relevant to this discussion because they don't have the same emissions systems and make significantly less hp/liter.
