Doesn't matter - that figure is still mind blowing. The crazy thing is it isn't even that unusual of a number. There are something like a dozen cars that you can buy today with figures approaching 200hp per liter.

I agree that there's historially not been a ton of cars doing that stock, but a moderately tuned japanese car, say one with the SR20DET from Nissan did that (400hp from a 2.0l Turbo engine) and was pretty reliable too. That's an engine from the mid-90s.
Same with the famed 2JZ (3.0l) from the Supra, which could be tuned to give reliable 600hp.
