I have a 2012 Cayenne base and am very happy with it. I've driven a 2016 Cayenne S, but not long enough to have a valuable comparison with mine. Aside from engines, 958.1 vs 958.2 changes were minimal design changes. I have driven a couple new Macans and like them very much; they are certainly more fun to drive than a Cayenne and as others have said, more like driving a car than a SUV. They are two very different, very nice vehicles. I already had my Z4M when I bought my Cayenne, so my fun car needs were met and I was looking for a full-size SUV. I recommend you consider what you want out of a SUV and at least sit in both a Cayenne and Macan to get a feel for the size difference.
"I am guessing Porsche is more reliable but probably more expensive to fix as well." This has been my experience, yes reliable, yes expensive to maintain.
