It's called i4 because it's the electric version of the next generation 4 series. Naming a car based on the nomenclature of a competitor is dumb.

i4 will not compete with Model 3 Performance. If i4 60 sDrive drives better than Model 3 SR RWD that will be enough. If i4 80 xDrive drives better than Model 3 LR AWD that will be enough.

Now that is truly a big point for Tesla. I was burned with my 2016 F31 whose iDrive 4 became obsolete less than a year later, even though iDrive 5 used the same exact hardware. With Tesla no such buyer remorse.
