it's done with the aid of E-sys a program which I believe is used (or potentially) used at the factory and perhaps specialist technicians. The local dealer will not have it .
Along with a Ethernet OBD cable its plugged in to the OBD port on the car.
Then ensuring you have the correct pszdata files (either the version your car comes equipped with or a later version) you can read in the all of the values the car is programmed with , make changes and write them back.
These pszdata file are like I guess a sort of template that lists everything the car can potentially have.
There is also the option of changing the vehicle order. (VO) so you can add options if the hardware is present.
If you are familiar with the registry in windows, it looks a but like that where you make changes to values and write them back to the car.

All unofficial obviously and if the dealer decides to update the cars software , any settings you have made get overridden.

I've made a few changes on my car and its worth doing but there is an element of risk involved - you have to follow instructions very carefully. Its straightforward though having said that.

Many here on the forums have done considerably more than me and the brave ones are the one who have tried out settings to discover what everyone is coding these days.

You will find some settings are market specific so you can enable a feature that wouldn't normally be enabled in your country but is elsewhere.
Some features seem to be in there hidden before they are made standard in later models. one example might be the telephone and entertainment list being displayed in the HUD.

Given this is the new G11 thread, I'm sure there will be some cool neat features to come out with this new model. Some will be of interest for the forthcoming G30 as well.
