That's a common misconception, thanks to BMW's very misleading advertising.

The S65 short block (just the block-- no heads, cams, valves, etc) was lighter than the S54's short block. This was the basis of their marketing department's claim.

The S65 long block (complete engine-- block, heads, cams, valves, vanos, etc) is heavier than the S54 long block.

Pretty misleading to state the s65 is lighter than the s54, imo. That said, I don't think the specific component weight is that meaningful-- far more meaningful is the complete car weight. And, both engines are boat anchors compared to something truly light weight like, say, the N52.
