I've never once done a real follow the "break in" rules on a car (or a motorcycle).
Put over 100k on many of vehicles and never had engine problems.

I also noticed the wording changed on my latest Yamaha motorcylce purchase. (Bought a brand new FZ-10 last month).
It stated "
Do not go over 6000rpm for extended periods for the first 600 miles".
