It's a well documented recent part of automotive history; you can search the internet for the full story. But the short story is a group of engineering students at WVU discovered VW diesel cars had "test" software in the ECU that allowed the car to pass US EPA emissions testing, then once not under test, the ECU would switch the emissions profile to a setting that was not EPA compliant but provided better performance and enhanced fuel mileage. VW was fined by the EPA and forced to buy the cars back from owners because the owners couldn't register their vehicles in their respective states.

A manual transmission can be set to "comfort", "sport", and "track" modes simply by the technique and speed at which you shift it; it doesn't need "modes", modes are for manumatics that try to behave like a real 3-pedal manual transmission. If you can money-shift it, it's a manual transmission. "Yeah, but NO ONE puts an automatic trans shift knob on a manual transmission."
