BMW and Great Wall clash over shared platform goals

The Munich-based carmaker wants to cooperate with the Chinese, but it will probably nothing. The strategic and cultural hurdles are too big.

The matter was very high because it was so important. At the Chancellery in Berlin, top executives from BMW and Great Wall signed the founding agreements last summer for a joint venture called Spotlight Automotive Ltd. Together and on an equal footing, the German and Chinese companies wanted to build electric cars in a new plant in Jiangsu. The idea: Together they are developing a small car platform on which new models of the BMW subsidiary Mini or Chinese cars can be produced.
