If memory serves me correct...I believe the digit after the slash had something to do with the base coat and how it relates to the top coat of paint.
For example, if you refer back to the older BMW exterior paint label...it not only gave the top coat's paint code and color...but it also listed the base coat color (in smaller print). Now that BMW has seemed to do away with this label and now puts the color code on the VIN label...the color of the base coat is not given by "name"...but is probably known "in house" when they see the color code "xxx/x".
EDIT: below are some examples of the old BMW paint color labels usually found somewhere in the engine bay: (the base coat is what you see on painted surfaces like in the engine bay and trunk area or other areas that aren't covered with the final coat of paint...especially when the final coat is metallic)
{paint code = 405/3: final coat is Imola Red...and the base coat is Ziegel Red}
{paint code = 397/7: final coat is Anthracite Metallic...and the base coat is Anthracite without the metalflake}
