And they did that by making sensible cars. They are very big in hybrid cars (for a long time now), downsized engines that still have good power/fuel efficiency ratio's, and are very advanced in autonomous driving and active safety systems.
This is just another 'sensible' feature.
Mind you, the american market is quite a small market for volvo; in europe they sell over 3 times as much. Hell, even in china volvo now sells more cars than in the US.
They make sensible, reliable and practical cars. So I guess in some ways they're more a competition for lexus and such than for the german luxury brands.
