This thread reminds me of how thankful I am that I got a mortgage through the Oregon Department of Veteran's Affairs. No selling to some potentially shady bank and they let me pay my own property taxes.
In fact, my financial rule #1 has become: Do not have anything to do with banks. I do have dealings with USAA Bank for many years (A very small account and a Visa card) and recently bought a Leaf Filter package for my gutters -- one of those deals where no interest if paid over a year or something and that is with Wells Fargo, a bank I detest. But so far so good.
