All the people i know that are your dad's size drive Tahoes and Escalades. There's a good reason for that. The only thing that gives me pause about that recommendation, is that you said an Infiniti QX80 is way too big.
Cadillac has all these smaller-than-an-Escalade SUV's that are the same vehicle in slightly different sizes. The XT4 - 7 i think. Maybe look at all those and see which size is the "Goldilocks" (fits just right)?

My grandfather has one and my mom tried it out and said it was not ideal for my dad to get in and out of - not sure which model but one of the sportier v8 Caddy SUV's.
Trying them on is definitely important as many have pointed out. If I were them I'd get a Tahoe but they seem to be set on something in the Merc/Audi/BMW/Volvo world.
