If you go back in the history of this thread, there are several other examples of the same thing happening at approximately the same time frame, with much more mundane models, like for example the planned but never sold US F45 2GT or most recently US iX1.

It still boggles my mind why they cancelled the iX1 for North America. It would have been a good competitor to the Audi e-tron Q4 or Mercedes EQB within a similar price point.
