To close this out, I figured out the problem. I have a key fob for access to my company's locked doors. It is RFID. It is on my key ring with the BMW key and under the right circumstances appears to interfere with the key signal.
I have started to use the little pocket within the pocket of my dress pants...whatever that is called, to hold the rfid tag next to my leg so the key is always facing out. Seems to have corrected the issue.
