But as soon as it becomes more vertical like the G80 and the G70 (each grill, not the whole thing) it starts to look odd.

Yes, the vertical design is really something that disappeared in the 40s and doesn't suit modern cars very well. I kinda get that BMW wants to give their high end models a more majestic look, but they should keep that design language for the Rolls Royce models. The 7 Series should still look a bit sporty yet constrained imho. It should also be immediately recognizable as a BMW (which isn't the case for the back end, I think).
