OBD II & your BMWs check control system are two different systems.

The CEL (check engine light) is a 1996 federal OBD II mandate for a standard system of codes and retrieval of those codes across all car manufacturers in regard to the car’s emissions (air pollution). Check your owners manual to see what it says about the Check Engine Light:



So anytime you get the CEL…you need to pull the codes to see which of the many sensors associated with your car’s emissions set the fault code. See the info below especially the 3rd & 4th bullets:
