I may get flamed for this but as I do 3d animation and modeling for a living - I have a bit of insight.

Guys it's not 1995 anymore. We're out here playing 60fps 4k open world games! You think that it takes the same time to make RD2 as it took to make Donkey Kong? Just the amount of hardware/electric needed to produce a game of that caliber these days is crazy, not to mention all the talent involved in various disciplines to pull it all off seamlessly..

Development teams are hundreds of people now, not 10. Electric and hardware are much more expensive now than in the past. It takes A LOT of both to produce something like a RD2, GTA, etc.

Now I'm with you guys as far as the micro transactions etc. It's definitely frustrating, but unless we want to go back to PS2 games/graphics - you gotta pay to play.

It is extremely difficult to find another form on entertainment for that hour/dollar ratio.

Take another game I've played for nearly 4k hours over an 11 year time period, that being Battlefield 4 (some 64 players servers are still fully populated and I play a few nights a week to this day!). With all DLC, I've probably paid $80 total and that was all over 10 years ago. $80 for 4k hours of entertainment, how could that ever be considered a bad deal?

Where I think $80+ for a game is a BAD deal would be a game like Resident Evil, or any short game where you maybe get 6-7 hours out of it without replays. There are a lot of games like that, where you pretty much see the vast majority of content in the game in under 10 hours. I try not to buy those types of games any longer unless it's a GOAT, quality remake like Dead Space.

TL/DR: YES, $80 or more is absolutely warranted for quality games like RDR2, Witcher 3, GTA V, and some FPS games you'll play for years. Otherwise, NAH!
Totally agree, one should do a research and find games that he can play over and over like you mentioned, i had PS4 with 20+ games, some i paid 10$ some i paid 80$. My advice would be, buy one or max 2 games at a time, play the crap out of them, and then buy another Game if you want. Out of my 20games,i mostly played Rocket League, GTA V and GT7

For games like GT7, GTA5/6, RDR2, FIFA or NBA, Rocket League, i would gladly pay 80$ because you can spend 100s of hours playing by yourself and/or then play online for another hundreds of hours.
But for games that are one dimensional or have only single story mode that last 8-10-12hours, its a waste of money imho

I get that it takes time to build a game and while I have no experience with it, I do understand the amount of effort involved in the project.

The online requirement, needs to stop. Pay now, play now, 2 years from now they cancel the game and you're out. Releasing games in alpha/beta with no intention of going full release, thats slimy and I refuse to play.

Or games like DayZ that's been out since 2013, and even before that as a mod for Arma2, still can't fix NPC pathing or them walking through walls. But want $50 bucks right now for it.

Those are the things that can go to hell with microtransactions.

1000% agree..Not sure how old you are but it was cool as hell to come home crack open a new game and get a little book and shit. You actually felt like you got something you could see for your $. I miss that feeling, but I'm glad I don't have all the clutter of the early Playstation days.

I'm 39. While I'm not old enough for the original or SNES releases, I do remember N64 and on. Walking in the stores playing the games while mom shopped. Getting the nintendo power, game shark/game genie and all that.

Probably the best time to be a kid was mid to late 90s, I'd say. Playing all the different games and blowing on the NES/SNES games. Soon as I typed that, I swear I could taste that green pcb again.

The clutter was part of the fun as a kid. Hiding a good game in some dumb games case to stop them from playing. Blockbuster rentals on games was the shit as a kid. Thats pretty much Twitch's job now though or a free to play weekend. Go rent the game, figure out if its good or not, then actually buy it. Plus the game actually stored progress on them for nintendo and SNES, so if you rented one sometimes youd get someone elses progress too.

With the current prices, I need to be invested in the genre and anticipate getting 50+ hours of solid gameplay to justify the higher cost. I usually stick to the standard editions; most "deluxe" versions just offer some in-game cosmetic items. Unless you're really into aesthetics, they're not worth the extra money upfront. It's essentially a tacked-on microtransaction from the get-go.

For the quality of a lot of games these days, $80 is getting pretty steep
