Terrible Loaner!
I’ve had a wide range of loaners throughout the years; 328i, 335i, 528i, 535i, X5 3.5i and X6 5.0i, but earlier today I received an X1 2.8i and it’s the biggest piece of crap ever! Feel like I’m driving an American made rental. Only plus is that I’m the first to drive it, as it was given to me with 10 miles on the odometer.

Why didn't it meet your standards besides the cheap build quality you noted? |

Interior quality, design and layout. Slow controls with delay in function; even pressed the heated seat button which didn't do anything; had to press it a second time. Extremely thin windshield wipers, one of which is angled like an American car's, both of which stop midway upon shut down and don't return to resting position upon start up without pressing button. Terrible, low quality sound doors make upon shutting. Poor steering feel, I understand the whole sport steering feel (have driven past 3 Series), but this steering feels as though it's not even 'powered'. Poor visibility out of the car all around. Just does not say BMW to me. :|

A stripper version of any car is not going to please a person who drives a BMW 7er. Ticking all the option boxes transforms the X1. Just the sound of the 6 vs. the 4 is a dramatic difference. Although I prefer my 750Li xDrive, I like driving our loaded 2014 X1 35i x-line occasionally. It is a powerful and nimble car for around town, and with all the options, it does not seem cheap to me at all.

Now that I've had more time with the car and driven it into the city twice since having it (100 miles done on it so far), I'm warming up to the way it drives and appreciate all that's packed into it for the price, but can still understand the shock upon first driving off in it (and still am shocked), if that makes any sense; just an update. Not sure why they didn't make an Audi Allroad-like 3 Series Touring instead.

Shouldn't the experience with the rental make you appreciate your 7 even more?
It's just a loaner after all, probably offered at no expense, so if it were me, I would be thankful I had something to borrow and hope that your repairs are completed quickly so that you can get back into the car you love We're lucky enough to have the luxury of complaining about first world problems... I agree with you about the X1, I think it is currently BMW's least expensive vehicle in the U.S.A. at the moment and it represents that. Im worried about what the FWD models will be like.... That said,... hope you had a great turkey day and I hope you get your car back quickly!

An X1 is unacceptable for any 7 series owner
When I purchased my 7 i had them agree loaner cars would be no less then a 5 series or X5.

BMW was very hesitant to bring the X1 to America. It has been deployed in EU a couple years, testing the market before bringing it to America. I think BMW made the right decision bring the X1 to the States, because I see a lot of them on the road.
I had the X1 loaner, it's not so bad. It's a compact, watered down BMW, and it drives like a golf cart (light and nimble). It's a good vehicle for those who wants something more practical than a 3 series, without losing drivability. If you're in a market for a Subaru Outback, the X1 is the luxury alternative. |
