Clutch Delay Valve Found!! 6 speed cars

Hey guys, I wanted to share this awesome discovery. I did his mod on my F30 but the f80 and F82 uses the same components to operate the clutch including the slave. Drilling out the clutch delay valve changed the whole feel of the car and driving experience. Please take the time to read on thread is here.

Someone told me this is a "must" do sort of thing for a six speed in BMW

I have trouble getting smooth shifts from 1-2nd in sport + consistently. (I am not a seasoned vet in manual driving)

Will this removing this, for sure make the 1-2 shift smoother and more consistent?

Judging by that first post on your link (also no jerking when normally driving and shifting from 1st to 2nd.) I would assume so.

I don't believe the M3/M4 has this.

Sport plus has rev match off, otherwise it is on. So smoother shifts with rev match.

and that is one of the reasons you are having trouble with the 1-2 shift.

And I don't believe removing the CDV makes things smoother.

Not sure why everyone has issues shifting thru gears in their F8X. This is my second manual M3 with the first being a 2015 and I couldn't be happier with how the gearbox shift quality is..

Your left foot probably sucks in modulating the clutch?

Yes m3, m4 and m2 have the clutch delay valve according to realoem and dealer. It uses same part number as all the other F series cars. My 1-2 shifts were improved drastically, almost feels like a different car. Much more positive shifts and smoother downshifts.

I've been driving MT for the past 15 years and 35 cars. IMO The F8x transmission has one of the better gear boxes or there. I have no issues smoothly going through gears. But to each thier own.

Does this mod negatively effect the car somehow?

Looks like TurboAra is correct. It is indeed the same part between the F30 and F80.

There is no CDV in that image. #14 is a slave cylinder.

Not saying there is a CDV in it or not (because I don't really know). But I'm just stating that the part numbers are the same for the F30 and F80 as TurboAra stated. For the F30, the CDV is inside the slave cylinder. Again, I am not sure if it is inside the F80, but they share the same part number which definitely looks like the F80 will have a CDV inside the slave cylinder as well.

Interesting, haven't had a need to disassemble a slave cylinder yet. Thanks for linking.

there is no CDV as a separate part, it is located inside he Slave cylinder and is there no matter how many M badges are on the car. If any of you have owned a E90/E92 car with a manual gearbox you would know how big of a deal it was to remove the CDV in those cars and it has been very well discussed. If you think your car is fine and perfect and doesent need this mod, it’s only because you haven’t felt the difference of a car with the modified cdv. Do not try powershifting these cars without modifying the CDV like mentioned above, I garuntee you the clutch will slip and if doing it constantly you will need a new clutch soon. To each their own, just trying to help the community and have people feel how much better the clutch can get with such a simple mod. Car will Not have any negative effect and will not void the warranty because it is visually undetectable.

Agreed, I drive in nothing but Sports Plus because I hate that kick down bullshit. This car has one of the smoothest manual transmissions I've ever owned.

I've driven E39 540s, E39 M5s and E9X M3s with and without CDVs. I think I know what I'm missing, which is not much. Never trashed a clutch even though the forums used to "say” I should without this mod. If you don't experience violence when dropping the clutch with a CDV you perhaps have other problems. IMHO all it does is take the "edge" off in much the same way that 4Ss are a little less edgier than PS2s

All IMHO of course....

Disclaimer: I've never dropped the clutch on an F8X... Yet...

Out of the three you mentioned, on the 540i had a CDV. The E39 M5 and E9x M3 do not have one.

At the people who say driving this car is cake: I'm sorry, but any sort of throttle modulation gets this car in a tizzy. The power is surges and gives you that buckin' feeling in sport plus. Efficient helps, but if you go on and off the power, the car doesn't like it one bit. I've driven BMWs of yore, the 1st to 2nd can definitely be smooth, but when driving spiritedly, it's not that smooth. Heck, Car and Driver themselves admit it in their review. I'd take their opinion over someone on the board any day.
