Prototype BMW 7 Series G11/G12 crashes into Police responding to a call...
Stuttgart, Germany Saturday March 28th, 2015 ~1am... A BMW factory test driver, driving a new 7er G1x prototype was involved in a crash Saturday morning. The 7er driver(42-year-old) hit a Polizei van(30-year-old) t-boned it and the Polizei van flipped over. Inside the Polizei van were three policeman. All parties involved escaped with only minor injuries. The accident occurred on the B27a (Theodor-Heuss-Straße) in downtown Stuttgart - as several Polizei cars(&vans) were responding to robbery call shortly after midnight/1AM. The Polizei had their blue lights and sirens on. According to media reports, the Polizei van(with three policemen aboard) came to a stop at their RED light... the driver of the 7er was proceeding under a green light. The BMW factory driver was testing a new (night)driver's aid. Its unclear if the accident was driver error or a sw issue. Both drivers have conflicting accounts of what happened and who had the right of way - and whether the Polizei had their blue lights and siren on at the time of the accident. The prototype was covered up shortly after the accident. BMW has offered their assistance in helping solve who was at fault. For now all that is known, is the damages are at least 150,000 euros. If the Bimmer was under green and the police truck was stopped on a red, then how'd they collide? Someone ran a light and isn't being forthcoming.

This does bring up an important question about autonomous driving aids. How do they account for emergency vehicles ?
Say the 7 was driving through a solid green and making a turn but the police van needs to cross a red light with sirens on, how does the car know to stop in time and in a safe way ? It seems it would only work if the police car also has car to x communications on board to tell the autonomous car to stop. Seems rife with problems. Too many points of failure. Too many avenues for hackers to commandeer a persons car. Let's keep autonomous cars away just a bit longer

Look carefully at the debris field in front of the G11 7 Series. Looks like a classic Black small Carbon Fiber shard debris field...just like you see in F1 and LeMans 24hr prototype crashes...where the cars have high CFRP content. Other crash debris mixed in...but lots of small black pieces...very characteristic of modern CFRP material. Time will tell. Thanks. PalBay

Agreed 100% that's all CF material there, I have family in Germany and one of them is a very well established BMW tech there and we were speaking about this about 2-3 hours ago actually.
Still debating if it was driver error or if it was a sw issue |

I've always wondered about the high end cars- with sound deadening and whisper quiet interiors. If you have the tunes on- you may not hear sirens.
BMW should think about possible putting an electronic aid to boost emergency signals when detected- could be relatively simple- might vary by country. |

That is an awful scene and look at all the tire cutting cfrp debris. Thankfully, no major injuries.
One other thing - the BMW is sitting all calm and strong.. and observe what the state of the van lying on its side. It's as if the van collided with a much mightier large truck. This collision impact sustenance says something about the strength of the car.
