Winter tires surprise
I bought a 2018 750 ix in September. It has 20" high performance tires. Living in northern Ohio they will not handle winter driving. My dealer said I could get a set of 19" Winter tires / wheels from BMW for 3K. The wheels would be the basic 19" 5 spoke aluminum wheels.
When they came in the parts manager calls me to say they are not silver but gloss black. Says that's the only way BMW offers this size winter tire set up. I went to look at them thinking if I don't like them we'd have to come up with something else. Well I think look good. They keep my summer tires and will switch them out each season. |

I'm going with Style 646 wheels with Michelin Pilot Sport All seasons instead of winter tires to replace my Alpina 21s during the colder months. The 20" Alpina with winter tires costs $8k!

Will do! It needed to be sourced from Germany and apparently at customs right now. Meanwhile, we had a snowstorm pass thru the other day and I got stuck in the house!

Thanks. BMW doesn't sell them as a set. Had to order the tires and wheels. These are 20s. The wheels that came with my car are the Alpina 21s.

Just fitted my 648M with Continental TS860S. Speed coding W which means v-max 270 km/h! Plan for next summer is to buy a set of 629's.

I’ve just fitted my winter wheels, 647m in standard finish. They aren’t perfect, but got them for less than half price (ex Germany) with tyres that have only done 2,000km. Look a bit small, but I’ll get used to them I’m sure and I like the style, much better than the alternative 19s.

I like the M wheels but my car is an Alpina and it might look odd. So went with standard BMW wheels for winter instead.

Are people finding the ride quality better on the smaller winter wheels and deeper sidewalls? My 20" RFT summers are like concrete and the car crashes and thumps over even small ridges and bumps

Hi Wills2,
I have same car as you, in MSport guise, on 20” Run Flat Bridgestone’s, and I am not experiencing the same crashing you are talking about. I run most of the time in Comfort Plus on the motorway, and no issue here. Ride is better, smoother/quieter than previous 2015 A8L also on 20” and air suspension, but not run flats, so I am delighted with current BMW ride quality. Just for info - car is new, and only had 11 miles on the clock when I collected, and now c. 3k miles Cheers Mark..

It squirms a bit when accelerating quickly and the steering is lighter, so i’ll be happy when I get the summers back on. |

Does seem strange. Does the suspension rise and fall correctly?
Was it ok from new, bad from day 1 or did it happen suddenly etc. Not saying it is this, but with my last Jag, also with air suspension, a stone got caught in the suspension (we have a gravel driveway and must have flung up and got caught), and that caused me all sorts of issues with both ride quality and crashing. I had to jack that wheel up to let the suspension extend in order to get the stone out in order to restore bliss. If under warranty, might be worth a chat with local dealers service manager, as if any good, will either know, or will have access to TSB’s for similar issues that BMW have seen.

The car has had a once over at my BMW dealer and a KDS alignment so they have had a good look at it and given it a clean bill of health. My car history is 5 M cars in a row with a few 5 series as well and I've never had a car that felt as loose and uncontrolled when dealing with small sharp ridges and pock marks. I find myself almost weaving down the road looking for every little issue on the road I've never had these issues in M cars hence my query around the RFT. My dealer has a few used 7s in so I think I might ask a favour and also get one of the techs to come out with me and get a second opinion.

Yes, probably a good idea.
When I had my 1st A8L i had a droning noise that came in a 65mph, which Audi could find no issue with and fixed under warranty with a new set of wheels and tyres - all this did was move the problem to 80mph or thereabouts, and eventually came back as the tyres wore. 2nd attempt included test gear from Germany, and other techs from Milton Keynes, no fault found, and then they got mine and a new one on the ramp side by side and did a full compare, and only thing found was a slight difference in the play in the propshaft, but not enough to cause an issue, however in desperation they authorised a new proopshaft, and problem solved. Morale of story here is that it may look ok, but may not be, so needs a bit of lateral thinking when comparing against a known good one. Good luck.
