Shall I get the extended warranty or ?
My 740d X-Drive warranty runs out in two days.
Its £1385.00 plus £250 excess PER YEAR I just had EGR valve go - under warranty I could hope that BMWs nice goodwill system can look after me or pay through the nose for the only warranty worth having. Discuss? |

That's what I've always done once the manufacturer warranty runs out. |

With all the expensive tech, that would be replaced it if went wrong, I wouldn’t run one without a BMW warranty. You only have to have an issue with a laserlight or the suspension to make it well worth while. I had the quote through for mine a couple of weeks ago and interestingly is was the same as you’ve been quoted for the 740d.
If I hadn’t needed to swap it for something bigger, I would have kept it for another year and paid for the extended warranty. |

I was getting really bad misting which wasn't clearing (see attached pic) and took it back to the dealers. They had the car for nearly 4 weeks testing it and trying various fixes as dictated by BMW. Eventually they replaced both units. My car at the time had only covered 12k miles. Point is anything can go wrong. I'd hate to think how much a new set of laserlights is. I found a set on eBay for £3.5k! So it's really your choice. I will look into the BMW warranty towards the end of this year when my manufacturer one runs out. But I will likely just keep the savings account I use specifically for car repairs and pay the monthly premium into that. |

For this car get the extended warranty. Anything that breaks will get your money back. I got the extended warranty and the rear air compressor broke at 40k miles. That was $3k. the entire 4 year extended warranty was $2k.

Interesting comments about extended warranty...pricing seems to be all over the shop!
When my warranty ran out, I had an offer to extend it but the price was nearly the same as was quoted back when I was in the same situation with my previous F01 7...ready? £2500ish / year. For that money and my own personal circumstances, I have chosen to simply save the same amount into a savings account that helps mitigate the risk, however, if the rate quoted had been £1385 / year...I would have taken it. Such things are always down to personal tolerance for risk, cost and financial situation so no universal answer to that one but at 2.5k / year...no thanks. Of course it depends on mileage / age, etc...I tend to change at 100k miles or 6 years (whichever comes first) and with the 730d models...they are very good for reliability...the increasing tech and laser lights do prey on one's mind a bit more I have to say...fingers crossed!
