150k Budget Death of ICE keeper car
So it may well be that in the near future, I am able to have a keeper car, one that just sees fair driving, no winters and that I can keep and preserve and enjoy.
It's not for sure yet, but of course I want to start thinking about what that car might be I am going to keep the budget at 150K CDN max. One possibility is to keep my Cayman GTS 4.0. It is a great car and I do enjoy it, but I have to say it's not a car that speaks to me in a way that other cars have in the past. I don't have that "je ne sais quoi" for it. I want manual and no turbos (supercharged is ok). Those are for sure. I would say that as I "mature" I am getting into more of the GT type car as opposed to a sports car. I want to have easy low rpm power and torque. I have always loved aston martins, so a vantage V8 is something that definitely stands out as a possibility. A z4m coupe or even an SI coupe is also a possibility. The e86 shape has always drawn me in. I have also always been drawn to the clown shoe, I actually prefer the S52 over the s54. A gated R8 also comes to mind, v8 or v10. anyways, I would say the aston martin is the front runner as I have always enjoyed the sound and torque of a V8 and I think they are stunning cars. My hesitation there is I guess reliability and cost of maintenance and parts. Anyways just throwing it out there to this knowledgeable group. Any thoughts people might have on these possibilities or alternatives would be welcomed. |

This has Aston written all over it, $100K should be PLENTY and yeah save some of the 50 for the servicing which is absolutely brutal.
Personally, I think a 991.1 GTS is really special but maybe too sporty for your needs. This is what i'd get though at that budget. Left field, Maserati Gran Turismo and Jaguar XKR-S. I might even have the masser ahead of the Aston, looks like a good woman in come fuck me boots, then it does with it's sound and it's a Ferrari V8 FFS. Relatively reliable, need a later model if tech is an issue. Last edited by Alfisti; 10-29-2022 at 09:25 AM.. |

V10 R8 all day long. Cayman does not even enter the ring for me. The only Porsche that would for me is a turbo 911

There's something about the R8 that does not ring my bell, NFI why. Would legit take the Jag/Aston/Maserati over it at the same price point.

sounds like the aston is what you want. manual, v8, exotic looks and curb appeal. nice ride quality. the only downside to them is the cost of maintenance. you'd want to have a good indy shop to work on it. the dealer is going to rip you off. they overcharge for the same ford part.
I believe the DB9 of that era was also available in a manual. But they are hard to find. You do get a NA v12 with a stick though and with an exhaust they sound very very good. https://bringatrailer.com/listing/20...martin-db9-29/ The R8 would be the safer bet though in terms of maintenance, parts, forums to help you figure things out. probably much better built too.

The more I drive my Vanquish the more I love it. Obv not a manual sports car but I’ve been very impressed with every Aston I’ve driven. Got an invite to test drive the DBX 707 next week and looking forward to that. Don’t know what a manual V12 vantage goes for in Canada but maybe that’s an option as a budget stretcher. The V8 is probably still plenty of fun though.
991.1 GTS with a manual is a great option. I’ve never been blown away by the R8 but haven’t driven a gated manual. The one I drove felt a little tame and I didn’t like the digital dash. Maybe an aftermarket exhaust was needed to wake it up. |

One thing I will say about the Aston that I've come to realize with my first CEL experience is that there are certain things only the dealer can diagnose as most indy shops don't have the software that the dealer has for diagnostics. Parts are expensive from the dealer, but if DIY'ing it most of the parts cross-reference a Ford part which is way cheaper, and the astonmartinbits website has parts a lot cheaper than dealers too. The 911 is probably the most reliable and easy to maintain along with great resale value. |

I will likely go the 2009 and up if I go Aston, but I have to say my risk adverse self doesn't like the prospect of potentially huge repair bills You can find R8 v10 gated at 150K Cdn in the cdn market but they will be higher mileage older examples |

No what I mean is that with a like to like budget, you can find much better examples and more plentiful options vs what you can find in Canada. There's next to nothing available here unless you want to pay an arm and a leg.

1st gen 997 (either turbo or gt3) with manual.
Mezger engine, guaranteed classic, still looks good. Might not be the most powerful option in your budget, but in 10 years all ICE cars will seem slow compared to EV sports/supercar madness If you can stretch your budget, Lamborghini Gallardo 550-2 with manual in either Valentino Balboni or Tricolore trim (my favorite). But try to find such a special gem..... (not expensive originally (in fact the cheapest Lambo at one point I believe), but almost no one ordered one....)

I mean like for like car, and buying in your own market. I've been looking at a lot of importing costs and yes it's generally more expensive right now. But there's such limited supply here.

Since you mention at least a passing interest in the Z4M Coupe, I highly suggest you drive one and see if it's for you. I've owned 2 for a total of 10 years, the first of which I bought new back in 2007, when BMW couldn't give the damn things away. I'm an old Datsun Z guy from WAY back (bought my boss's '73 when I was 19, and I was hooked), and when the Z4MC came along, I was instantly blown away by the looks and similarity to the original Datsun Z. Think E46 M3 minus a couple hundred pounds, minus a back seat, in a small, low-to-the-ground, sexy package. I'd still have my last one if it wasn't hit last year. I still hope to get another again someday. With your fairly large budget, you could afford a super-clean example and have a buttload of cash left over.
