Useless post guy strikes again!

On a side note - with respect to my previous post - if I had a MINI dealer near me, I would have grabbed that in a heartbeat. I was really surprised at how fun a car it was, and very very quick. I was very impressed.

I prefer the size to my GTI, but the motor, suspension, brakes and handling are all wildly inferior. I even tried driving used ones at CarMax just to make sure I wasn't just feeling green motors, but they all felt like they were breathing through restrictor plates. Did I miss that you need rear seats? If not, Miata. If so BRZ, but be prepared to really hate that engine too. If I didn't need a backseat I'd have a 181 hp ND Miata tomorrow. As for the 1er talk, I can't see one being a fun daily, but that's probably just influenced by my dislike of our departed N54 one. Heavy, one wheel drive, comical understeer, loud, ineffective brakes, goofball seating position. Not a fan. |

I don't think we drove different mini's - I think we just have different opinions. I absolutely loved the new F series Mini and don't like the previous generations at all. To each their own, right? I think the new mini is just the right size and felt that the power and performance during everyday driving was spot on. Seriously - the only reason I didn't get one is the reliability factor and that there is no Mini dealer in my town. If there was, I would own one.

What about a used i3? Those things are supposed to be super fun under 60 mph. Given where you live, you should be able to easily find places to charge it and easily park it as well. A 2014 is falling to your range.

Of course if you'd like an interior that's not either black or tartan, I can still see the appeal. I just wish they'd created a nicer Mini while leaving more of the previous hooligan handling traits. This probably explains my fascination with the R56 Goodwood with a manual. And I'm also influenced by my previous Mazda 3, which ran out of thrust at about 5k rpm. The Mini motors just felt too much like that. The separation between 60% and 100% were super narrow. I guess I just prefer more the Jeckyl and Hyde approach. Or at least less Hyde. |

The new mini is much more mature and for some of us, that isn't a bad thing. The new ones really do feel like a current 1 series BMW to me.

Getting something like a manual Ford Fiesta ST or a Focus ST (or better an RS) makes no sense to me. That aside, I suggest BMW Z4 3.0si Coupe for $15K. Fun, easy to park, fuel efficient, bulletproof N52, and a nice manual trans. Other than that, a used Bolt; great point-and-shoot capability, zero maintenance, easy on the back to get in and out, great headroom, and it's a nice hot hatch. Plus, no one will try to vanalize it or steal it, since it is a bland car and only has a 238 mile range and needs a charging station to refuel. Hope you find something suitable. That was the plan all the way. But when I see strange individuals wondering around the parking lot, smoking pot all day long and ongoing police activity in the Martinez area (this is the closest train stop to Walnut Creek), I start to worry about scratches, theft, etc...

Yes, despite having an F80 as my weekend car, I always ask to drive my buddy's Fiesta ST because it's actually a really really fun car to drive.

If you're thinking of staying with BMW, my last two BMWs were a e92 335is and a 128i....
Fun factor: 128i > 335is My tuned N54 335 destroys it in power but I never enjoyed daily driving it as much as that 1 series.... miss that car. |
