If you can't wrench cars, then upkeep cost on an older car will pile up quickly. In this case it might be best to buy a newer car with warranty.

For example, you bought a battery a year ago............OK? So you won't have to buy another one for 4+ years. You got hit with a spell of maintenance and think it's going to continue at the same pace.........and even if it does it's still hundreds cheaper per month. Did you figure in the cost of tag/tax/title as well? The math says to keep the car, but you want something newer. |

I assure you i want to keep the car as a replacement will be very bland compared to what I have. A stripper Rogue (and I mean STRIPPER) is no fun compared to what i have now.

Keep it. And just put whatever you'd be spending on a lease, registration, and increased insurance into a separate account for maintenance on the current car.

Here's my take on it. Assuming it is financially feasible, keep the 9-3 as a beater car for bad weather and Home Depot runs, and pick up a Mustang GT convertible to scratch your sports car itch. The mileage isn't crazy high on the 9-3 and assuming some of the bigger maintenance items have now been taken care of, it should keep trucking with regular basic maintenance for quite a while. This option potentially lets you experience the best of both worlds.

A low mileage (sub100k) 2008 9-3 in good nick does about $15k at a saab specialist in these parts. Its a certain type of people that look for these cars, and they are rare, thus exclusive.

Nope, no market for them in NA. i am australian and find north american car buyers EXTREMELY conservative. petrified if no dealer network, they don't buy and sell privately. Just in another thread today and guy wrote off a VW Alltrack because they are being discontinued soon. i mean why??
Anyway, here look, $5K i reakon. More miles but AERO with bigger engine and it's been for sale for months. https://www.kijiji.ca/v-cars-trucks/...mbi/1461372122 |

The depreciation cost of a newer car will quickly offset any maintenance/repair cost on a sound depreciated/paid-for car. In pure monetary terms, you are ahead keeping it until something really serious gets the car out of the road.

Having owned a saab previously (Viggen) I understand a bit as someone offered to buy the car off me once the company went out of business.
Wagons are tough to find these days. I was looking at some before I settled on my E61. Both the 2.8t V6 and 2.0t are tuneable and fairly reliable. That being said parts are harder to come by these days; most stores don't stock so you have to order or go online and wait. If you wrench or can do basics on the car it makes sense; you also know the history of the car and the maintenance that's been done. So other than fluids, tires, brakes and some suspension components... what else could come up? |

Is it really all about the money, or just about the pleasure of having a unique vehicle that still has soul? I don't think $3,500 over two years is anything worrisome.

Future fear i guess remains the suspension, this is where things tend to add up quickly as you repair in sets so it's minimum $500 every time, if not more. TBh more about money to a point because the "little bit fun and different' would be my future toy car so i am willing to sacrifice my DD to get that. Buying "Toyhonda" 5 years old is expensive and no guarantees (though surely better than Saab) and leasing an absolute bare boned stripper is still double my repair bills. |

Have you considered listing the car for sale on Bring A Trailer? A 2008 Saab 9-3 TurboX SportCombi 6-Speed with 90k miles just sold there for $15,750. Granted, the turbo and 6MT made it pretty rare and possibly sought after.
