I know this isn't an EV but I just wanted to keep everyone in the loop. An ice car hit a tree today and caught on fire. For our avid arborists, the tree is mostly okay.

Just wanted to update everyone on the stolen car in Houston that caught fire. While it isn't an EV it looks to be a total loss unfortunately. This happened yesterday.

Another ICE fire to report. This happened yesterday. It also damaged a port-a-potty unfortunately. Some of it melted. Probably was highly mephitic.

Did it take 36,000 gallons of water to put it out?

I doubt it. Here is another ICE fire that happened three days ago that probably didn't need 36,000 gallons of water to put out.

Check out this train car that was carrying 2,000 gallons of diesel. It caught fire ten days ago.

I don't think the argument is EV's catch fire more often. It is they take 36 times more water to put out.

A firetruck carries 1,000 - 1,500 gallons. Plenty of water to put out ICE fire where there is no fire hydrant access, like an emergency lane on highway.

It is an issue that fire departments are still trying to find an answer for.

There are techniques being used now like fire blankets and it has been discussed many, many times in this thread. There is no longer a reason to use 36,000 gallons of water. It’s a cool and refreshing option though. But not necessary. I just don’t want anyone to get complacent and think that ICE vehicles don’t catch fire. We have to be vigilant.

Not many departments carry them. They are expensive and one time use. They have also experimented with using foams instead of just water. An inexpensive alternative to water has yet to be found. Most of the time they just let them burn out or even submerge entirely in water for days.

The departments that have blankets, they let each blanket go with burned EV. It is to remain covered in salvage yard as the batteries can reignite up to 30 days after.

Lots of opportunity to innovate. Water is pretty cheap though. Lithium iron phosphate batteries don’t have thermal runaway and are about fifty percent of Tesla production.

gblansten, Here's a thought: When the government stops forcing EV's on us and making ICE cars more expensive, I will stop posting negative news on EV's. Do you think as the EV's are more plentiful and the fleet older while being off warranty and for the most part on the secondary market do you think the news will get any better?

The world’s 100 worst polluted cities are in Asia — and 83 of them are in just one country
March 19, 2024
All but one of the 100 cities with the world’s worst air pollution last year were in Asia, according to a new report, with the climate crisis playing a pivotal role in bad air quality that is risking the health of billions of people worldwide.
The vast majority of these cities — 83 — were in India and all exceeded the World Health Organization’s air quality guidelines by more than 10 times, according to the report by IQAir, which tracks air quality worldwide.
The study looked specifically at fine particulate matter, or PM2.5, which is the tiniest pollutant but also the most dangerous. Only 9% of more than 7,800 cities analyzed globally recorded air quality that met WHO’s standard, which says average annual levels of PM2.5 should not exceed 5 micrograms per cubic meter.
China reversed a five-year trend of declining levels of pollution, the report found.

We’ve got people dying right and left in ice vehicles that crash and catch on fire. We’ve gotta do something. Model S is one of the safest cars ever tested by Euro NCAP.

I’m assigning you to worry about EV fires. You seem to think they explode when rear ended. Your worry on this offloads that for me and is appreciated.

Wonder why NHTSA doesn't recall and force all EV makers to install the new fireproof blanket with Kevlar reinforcing inside the battery box for all EV's?
I am pleased that you are willing to take on this worry burden. This is a fairly rarefied and niche concern and it is important that at least one person cover it. Thank you.

Good luck when our firehall change to EV fire trucks. Will the battery have enough juice to pump 30000+ gal of water

Not surprising. Only the start of the scale backs.

https://www.autonews.com/regulation-...amid-criticism

There’s a defunct shopping mall a few miles from my house. The parking lot is being used right now by Tesla, and the herd of brand new vehicles sitting in that lot is growing by the day. Hard to estimate, but there could be between 700-1000 cars sitting there right now. The parking lot looks like a few days before Christmas at the old mall.
