The photos are LWB. I knew it, when BMW would get to hybride, they would make the most sporty and powerfull cars, and here they are. The Lexus and the S400 hybride are nothing compared to this 7, well have to wait for the tests. BMW also had a comcept of a diesel hybride, the X5. And at the IAA there will be a, hope so, a clean hybride sportscar.
Hybride 7 from 0 to 100 km/h in only 4.9 sec, even faster than 750i!!!!!! Imagine the next 5 series hybride, Hybride 5 or 555ih, it will be lighter than the 7, so it may go 0-100 km/h in 4.7 sec, as fast as the M5 E60 with its 5.0l V10 507 hp. Imagine the next M5, in 4.0 sec???!!!!! Byebye E63 AMG, RS6 and CTS-V. Can't wait for the next 5 series. |

This is considered a "mild" hybrid, just like the new S400. They both produce the same ultimate result, with a different approach.

The pictures definitely show the LWB version. No indication if they use an xDrive system in the AH7 though...

I agree though, it looks silly and is totally redundant, not to mention anything like that makes the car that much harder to clean or keep clean!

Why should it be useless? It is the exact right way. The Americans & Saudis some people all over the globe can keep their ridiculous big engines and will use less fuel doing so. If you can't re-educate people to use less resources, one has to do it this way.
Don't get me wrong, I l o v e big engines, but in a country with speed limits it is as much overkill as a Machine Gun in a bar fight. I hope no one is offended, just replying to above comment. The hydrogen car will come as soon as very important people with tons of money will allow it. It is another fine piece of engeniering presented by BMW. This is what makes me enjoy working for them.

The other issue is this... even with the hybrid technology on the V8 cars, the 3.0 liter diesel motor is still much more fuel efficient and way simpler to produce and I believe produces few grams of CO2 per km. And, on top of all that and drawing on the previous point, has polluted the earth less in production. Hybrids are a waste of time, in my opinion. We should be pushing diesel technology in North America much more and also working towards the hydrogen combustion engines and hydrogen fuel cells as an alternate. Think of these topics in terms of "Energy rate of return." |

Any chance they will move this into the other series? A 7 is just too big of a car for me.

As for "Americans and their big engines", not everyone here subscribes to that notion. I'd love to see BMW offer their smaller engines, especially the diesels here, but I understand that they're unsure of the market. It would be interesting to see what a diesel-electric hybrid could do. Using some of the same hybrid technology with the 23d engine, a "535d active hybrid" (where the "35" comes from the 23d + electric power) might be attractive. If it got 30+ MPG city and 40+ MPG highway, people would probably be very interested, especially if it had sub-6 second 0-60 performance. Put the same thing in the 1 or 3 series and shoot for 50 MPG, which would totally freak out the Toyota Pious crowd... Or in the X1 and shoot for the 30+MPG/40+MPG mark, which might make it the hottest thing in the stable, at least in the USA. |
