OMG...I couldn't imagine shooting something like that, then having to go back to a "standard" pistol. Probably would ruin any other experience past, present, or future lol

I'm an average shooter, but I consistently hit tight bullseye groupings with this gun 10-15 yards.

I don't carry this gun. It's purely for range fun.

I do carry this Dan Wesson ECO. Which is also fun to shoot. But the mag doesn't hold 26 rounds like the Atlas. Lol.

Watching Alaska State troopers. Trooper prefers 12 gauge with slugs over centerfire rifle to go after a grizzly bear. Any thoughts on that?

Depends on the general purpose. For shooting one from a distance of 40y+ I’d want a rifle at least .308 and for a charge situation a good pump 12g loaded with 3” slugs would be my choice.

I guess the question of hunting versus protection comes into play. Pretty sure State Troopers aren't hunting and are looking for protection. Where as hunting you may want to take a longer shot.

I've heard many people recommend pump guns for self protection. I have never had a feed issue with my semi's, and have had a few short cycle issues (my fault) with my pump gun. As noted, the feed issue was due to an error on my part trying to get more shots in a shorter period of time..... but that's exactly what you would want to do if a bear was charging you.

I've never had a miss feed with a pump shotgun. I have my Great Grandfathers old shotgun and the thing runs like a dream. Nice smooth action, reliable and I have history with it. We used 870's in our Scout cars and from my perspective it was an excellent weapon both offensively and defensively at least in an urban environment. I'm retired now and they've gone to 5.56 Carbines which are great, but the 870 is still in use.

I’m wasn’t talking about hunting but along the lines of a previously wounded bear by a hunter or car strike for example, bear still on the move and the only shot is a longer one to put down the critter. Police in rural areas often are called upon for this job. I’d rather reach out and touch it with for example a 7mm rem mag then run after a frightened, wounded, angry brown bear with a scattergun.

As far as semi’s I’ve had occasional issues with them but never a pump. I use my Beretta SA for trap, skeet and bird hunting but not when a bear is coming at me in full change mode. I’ll stick to my 870. To each his own.

Ok, I can understand the point of dealing with a wounded bear.

And, I'm not saying one is better than the other (pump - auto), I'm just posting my experience. But I do think I can put more rounds on target in less time with the auto.

You didn’t specify caliber so I’ll offer my two ammos and caliber.
For 9mm Para I use Corbon 115g +P. Mainly because it was top on line about 20 years ago and I bought a ton of it then. Still is top tier defense ammunition.

For .45 ACP Federal HST 230g +P.

Picked up one of these babies..
If you don't know what this is, it is a Sig Sauer X-Five Legion. What makes this special is that it has tungsten mixed in with the polymer, making it a heavy more sturdy polymer firearm. It has the option of adding a red dot.. which I may do in the future. Purpose of this gun is not for carry.. but more for poor mans version of the CZ competition pistols. I have shot it one at Triggercon (a USA west coast Shot Show).

Knowing me, I had to mod it before even shooting it!
Added some JB Weld to the trigger bar and trigger, and filed it down. This would reduce take-up and creep, and it worked out great. If I had a welder, I would go that route to make it more permanent.. but temporary JB Weld. Now if I can figure out how to make the trigger more crisp on the break (trigger is smooth, but I always like crisp breaks)
