These many repairs are not normal and in some way, not acceptable, correct.
But to judge from owning one high-end luxury car, that the whole brand is not reliable - quite a stretch I would say. My grandfather had an E28, an E34 and an E39 - all without any major hick-ups and usual repairs for the age / mileage they were in. E28 + E34 even had nothing more done to them other than usual services. The E39 was handed down to me 2 years ago and again, no major issue. Never let me stranded, just regular maintenance which would occur on a 20-year-old, 200k Camry or ES350 as well. In over 10 years of ownership, E46 Touring of my dad had no major issues other than a battery that went flat - and unfortunately some new glow plugs because the dealer messed up and didn't diagnose the flat battery from the beginning. My M3 now had a misfire on cylinder 8 - most likely an ignition coil - which Mk5 GTIs burned through like crazy. I was not amused, but then again, I drive this car hard all the time, it is a toy for me. The GTR was mentioned here being reliable & cheap, which is more or less true, but if something like the Sat-Nav screen breaks, you can check your piggy bank as well. Again, one car doesn't represent the whole brand, even one model doesn't represent the whole brand. What were the actual repairs and could it be, that the dealer may have made issues worse (by not knowing the car well enough etc.), leading to the point that you had to come in again? |

insanecoder lol you beat me to it .With purchasing any used vehicle their is a certain amount of risk involved . You really have no idea how it was treated before the 1st lease was up .Most of the folks I know that lease cars treat them like crap .

OP just sell your car, cut your losses and buy a Japanese car. Seems like you didn't do any research before you got into a BMW and is salty about it. A lot of people like yourself don't account for the cost of ownership on a used german car.

Exactly. Sounds like this person didn't do their own due diligence in researching the car he was buying. Making assumptions typically falls on the person making the assuming as the person at fault.
I'd look like a fool if I went onto a Ducati forum complaining about the recent routine maintenance bill I had to fork out. $1500 for the 15k service with a 10% discount. I did my research before buying this bike and didn't expect it to be like my ZX-10R which has had nothing but just oil changes. It sounds harsh but this just seems to be another case of someone chasing a hood emblem. |

What you should get is a 3 series. It's the most reliable and least maintenance to run. Everything is simplified compared to the 7 series. Mass production numbers mean the bugs get worked out before they put things in the 3 series. In general for luxury cars, the more expensive and high end it is, the less reliable it is. That's why resale values drop like a rock after the warranty runs out.

Statistically, the 2 Series is BMW's most reliable model.

That may be so, but I was thinking the 3 is the most like the 7 series the OP has. Since the 3 series is a sedan and it has a lot of practical space. Nothing wrong with the 2. I'd love an M2 in my stable.

A lot of the QA issues on those stats are the electronics
the 2 series of course is more stripped down less of those electronics issues = "more reliability" thanks but as a DIY, I'll replace whatever is needed.. need those gadgets |

I’m with the OP on this. I’ve had well over 20 BMWs and most have been pretty reliable. I estimate about $1-2k/year in maintenance unless new and under warranty. And I do all maintenance either by the book or ahead - if I hear the slightest noise, it is in the shop. Because I’ve learned that waiting costs money.
But to the OP’s point, how is anything other than bulletproof acceptable these days? I would expect the 7, and new 8 to be super reliable, and when not for the owners to be coddled at these price points (and with BMW’s overall reputation). And really, the whole line should be. But they just are not; and us long-term BMW owners seem to be conditioned to accept less-than-stellar reliability in exchange for better performance? Well, the performance advantage is shrinking if not gone compared to many brands. And the reliability, which has improved over the last 40 years, has not improved enough. In other words, BMW is becoming less competitive, IMO. They either need to really up their performance advantage, or make a strong reliability move (ideally both). But they seem to be focused on the brand itself (marketing, not engineering) and comfort, so I don’t expect any change. BMW has a lot of success to back up their strategy; it is just slowly leaving me behind. |

Just because I drive a $100K car does not mean I want to spend $50K in making it do what it should, work! I love my 7, best car I've had. Once I can get out with minimal loss I'm never looking back. Like I said, break my wallet. |

I knew the history.. clean. Original owner got it serviced by BMW and it was not a lease. It was lightly used with only 24K miles. No repairs only maintenance items.
