This clears up my own confusion, having gotten both answers from local hunters. We get deer here that are often 6-8, perhaps 8-10 if that base point is small. I guess I figured that these are so common they can't be trophy-worthy if they are showing up in the back yard (the apple tree surely helps with that).

Cooper's hawk is a regular visitor to our place, much to the dismay of all the other birds and small creatures in the area. When he (or she) is sitting perched on our fence, every other creature goes into hiding.

I can hear owls at night. I don’t see them, only hear them. I am hearing them now, “who who who,” is what they sound like.

I've got the opposite problem. I can't hear them because my hearing is awful, but I can see them. Here are some on our roof. We can see them flying just after sunset looking for dinner....and the beat goes on.

Had a baby bun in the yard last year without a fear of humans. I barely survived the encounter with that man-eater.

That photo reminds me of a Nextdoor post I got sucked into a few months back (I generally try to avoid that site, but there I was). Anyway, someone posted a camera-trap photo of a canid from their back yard with the question "Is this a coyote or a wolf?" The former are very common in these parts, the latter much less so. A couple of dozen posts, evenly split, many expressing great certainty about their coyote or wolf conclusion with reasons cited (along with a couple of fox suggestions). Downthread, eventually, was a post along the lines of "This is Larry Jones, I'm a wildlife biologist and assistant director of the Wolf Sanctuary. The animal in the photo is a dog."

My two neighbors, and our, back yards kind of meet back behind our property line (150 acres total) and we pretty much have everything running around in the woods back there.
I haven't seen bear or coyotes but see their scat in the yard/woods. And I've heard the coyotes at night time. Pretty much everything else I've seen throughout the day/night. My brother down south (Mississippi coast) doesn't get bear on their property, but he does get alligators. He has on a few occasions been down on the pier cleaning fish and one has wondered up the boat launch and got between him and the house. Not sure which one (bear or alligator) would concern me more. |
