Interesting some people liked Reacher. I hated it because Tom Cruise played Reacher. Having read several of the books, they needed someone much bigger to play that role (maybe Dwayne Johnson).

Enjoyable movies that come to mind for me are:
Godfather I / II
Goodfellas
Rocky I / II
Casablanca
Apocalypse Now
Dark Knight
Scarface
Silence of the Lambs
Fargo
Midnight Run
Fast Times at Ridgemont High

I'm sure there are some others I'm not thinking of now.

That was a common gripe about Cruise playing Reacher. But I think Cruise nailed it (The second Reacher film comes out later this year, BTW: Never Go Back).

I never read any of Lee Childs' books, so I wasn't tainted with any preconceived notions about the character.

I liked the Firm a little better as a book than the movie too but enjoyed the movie and thought Cruise did a good job in it. However, in this case, it makes no sense for him to play the role of Reacher IMO. It's like using the Geico gecko to play Godzilla. It just doesn't make any sense, particularly since I don't think the movie was based on one book in particular, but the character in a series of books. Aside from size, I don't think Cruise captured that character much at all.

The books are awesome BTW.

This.

His size is such an important element of the character. There is so much that is conveyed in the books by his size that Cruise simply could not capture. Yes, they could make him a badass in the fight scenes but he could not intimidate anyone by sheer presence as Jack Reacher does in the books. A huge miss.

I think I'd have to add Tombstone to my list. I've seen it like a million times and never gets old.

Without a doubt, best movie of all time is Forrest Gump. But here is my list;

1. Forrest Gump
2. Shawshank
3. The Breakfast Club
4. The Fast and The Furious Series (the original being the best of the bunch)

I quote this movie all the time....
"You called down the thunder now. You tell them jtodd_fl is coming and hell is coming with him."

PS: Haven't added my list, because I don't watch enough movies. They'd all be old.

Gump is awesome. I tell people that Forrest and I are proof one can get a degree from the University of Alabama with a 75 IQ.

My parents live near Winston Groom and see him from time to time. My dad had heart surgery a couple of years ago and during his stay we heard a big commotion down the hall. Come to find out Winston had the same surgery my dad had and his buddy Jimmy Buffett was in the cardiac floor to see Winston. I told my mom I'm glad dad or the others on the wing didn't code during the visit because all the staff was big dogging it with Jimmy and Winston.

As I said, not having read the books, my view of the character isn't tainted, so I bought into it.

Regarding character size, I don't recall reading many complaints about 6'-4" Hugh Jackman playing 5'-3" Wolverine...

Kind of a fascinating thread seeing how people put their choices together--you can almost see their personality from movies they really like--most people seem to like a certain genre. Most of the lists seem to have a coherent order...ie..if you like Black Hawk Down you probably will like Saving Private Ryan...or if you like the Godfather you probably will like Goodfellas...that's my psychological analysis. Nice being reminded of all the good flicks from years ago.

Exactly! It's similar to people watching at an airport or public places.

I have a team of 36 people at work and I often use movie quotes (or quotes from great leaders) to make points. It's to the point where I'll give them a quote and then ask what movie the quote is from. It's fun and also helps make the point towards their development.

I used a good Cool Hand Luke one today when we failed to communicate effectively, "What we have here is a failure to communicate".

Thanks to all for the replies, it's reminded me of some movies I need to watch or watch again.

Aw man it really took until page 2 and only 2 mentions!?

No matter how you felt about the sequels, the original Matrix was a fantastic movie that did some amazing things with CGI in 99. It's my absolute favorite movie of all time, saw it 5 times the day it came out lol.
