So no k24 legal swaps I to an EG civic
Even though it would literally cut emissions in half
CARB legal engine swaps are definitely possible as long as emissions equipment isn't modified. Engine can even be from a different manufacturer, let alone a different chassis. It's a lot of work but it's not illegal.

Thank you for further confirming my posts.... Yes, swaps are def a pain in the ass, but you can swap most anything if it follows what I said in my first post

Found another article with a good explanation of the new testing procedure: https://www.thedrive.com/cars-101/41...tune-flash-faq

Would be interested to hear if someone has failed after flashing back to stock or has passed despite a tune. Or what the process through the referee is like in the case of a fail. Anyone had their car smogged in the last couple weeks?

Someone posted in the MHD or one of the other threads that they flashed back to stock and passed.

You can only swap engines that is designed to go into cars into another car
Ie no truck engines into cars and vice versa
Now it is even harder as you can't even unlock Ecu for immobilizer bypass since it may create a different check sum and cause it to fail smog
It's a lot of backwards laws happen, and it got worse
It's not about emissions since a newer engine will ALWAYS run cleaner than one that is 20 yrs older
If it was about cleaner air , they should ONLY care about what comes out the tail pipe

Talk about a straw man argument.

I'm not pro-smog. I don't remove or disable emissions-related equipment. But people should be able to apply a simple tune to their ECU if they want to.

Any recent Smog check experiences people has had with pure turbo and tune installed since this dumb unnecessary thing was enacted?
I've been planning to get PS2 and I'm now ready to upgrade but now I'm not too sure....

The point of the OBDII system is that the car monitors how the car runs. You fail smog if the car can't/hasn't monitored. You also fail smog if your emissions are outside of the factory specs.

It's so much easier, faster, and safer to check the computer versus putting the car on a dyno with a tailpipe sniffer.

The checksum just adds up all the 1's and 0's in the tune on your ECU. After years of recording the checksum on different cars, CARB has a database of valid checksums for each car.

Changing the tune changes the 1's and 0's, so you'll get a different checksum. Forcing a known-good value is a felony. You cannot pass the checksum using an aftermarket tune. Stock, MPE, Dinan, etc are all certified, so they will have a valid checksum.

They also check to see if your ECU is locked (supposedly preventing tunes). Even on a stock tune, you will fail with an unlocked ECU.

Hardware mods that can be controlled by a stock tune won't cause a checksum failure. But you'll fail the visual if it looks aftermarket without an EO number.

Dinan does not have a matching CVN, so you can't say it's certified. Dinan still requires OBD unlocks and all, because it's 'tampered' data afterall. If they have a CARB number, this may not matter, but in the end, the ecu will fail the CVN checksum.

Also, the ecus can be unlocked and tuned without any traces to CAL ID/ CVN, so it's still not exactly that different. I can unlock these M2C ecus without any trace at all, anywhere.

what does "unlock" exactly mean? as in does it still consider "unlocked" after flashing back to stock?

So I should be ok if I flash back to stock and lock DME just for the smog? Just want to plan this out before I start smog checks next year and what to prepare for.......

as has been said many times in here; Flash back to stock and remove any aftermarket parts(charge pipe/bov, DP's) that may have them suspicious of a modded engine.

Wow! This reminds me of the Commiefonia ammunition magazine ban a few years ago. What will they go after next, plastic silverware.

The unlock is a data hack in the dme. It does modify the checksums/CVN, so it will still be considered "tampered".

Didn’t they already go after plastic straws, because those high capacity rapid delivery devices cause death in poor innocent persons.
