No the oculus headset is very warm so your whole face gets really hot. I have 2 fans pointing at my face and it does a good job keeping me cool.

Oculus has some announcements today, hoping a price-drop is one of them.

If you want to run the oculus for sim racing, you really want a higher end PC with a 980gtx minimum, but preferably a 1080. Being able to run a steady 90fps and a high pixel density is key. High frames because stutters break the immersion and can make you feel sick. High pixel density because the headset resolutions are just barely acceptable to see the next corner down the track. If you have to run a lower pixel density it's almost impossible to judge upcoming corners.

There's no official COTA in ac so not sure if there's a fan made one and how accurate it would be. Honestly if it isn't laser scanned, then I wouldn't call it accurate for the purposes of really learning the nuances of a track to help you get faster at the real one. All of iracing tracks are laser scanned so that might be your best choice if they have COTA. I know they have most of the major US tracks so lots of pro racers use it to learn tracks they haven't been to yet.

As far as what to get, it's tough because there are so many options out there for different budgets. The most important part for me is having a good wheel and pedals in a sturdy cockpit that has a proper driving position. My only experience is with Fanatec wheels at this point (I went from cheap logitech wheels to various fanatec wheels). The club sport wheel and pedals are very good. I know people who buy thrustmaster wheels and love them, but seems like even those guys buy the fanatec club sport pedals. There are dozens of cockpits out there and I haven't done research on them in awhile so best to just check online reviews about seating position and sturdiness. Then you just need a decently spec'd PC especially if you just plan to run on a single screen. I always recommend a 120hz/144hz gaming monitor as they let you run sims really smoothly which helps a lot. TV's tend to have screen tearing or latency, both which really affect your ability to drive well. But its the cheapest route for a large display so just make sure you use a tv that has a "game mode" which turns off all the tv effects that create latency in the video output. With just a slight latency, you won't be able to catch a slide and not be able to figure out why. You'll just feel like you suck at driving sims.

I already have a pretty well spec'd pc that runs my HTC vive and mountains of VR porn. I don't plan to sim with screens as the good ones are expensive and require at least a 3 mon setup for better immersion. I'd rather spend that money on the rig. I'm thinking if I should go with the Fanatec CSL Elite line or jump straight to the ClubSport line with the V3 inverted pedals. Its about $1k difference. Since I game on PS4 as well, I was wondering if I should just get the CSL Elite Wheel (PS4), with the CS SQ shifter, and the CS V3 pedals to save some money. That extra $1k I'll be saving from going with the CS base/bmw wheel, and V3 inverted pedals would allow a bit more money to go into the cockpit. Btw, what cockpit would you recommend? Still RSeat? |

It's hard for me to strongly recommend any cockpit since I haven't tried very many. The best thing to do is read reviews on some of the popular sim blogs and go from there. I tend to pick cockpits that aren't only functional, but look nice as well which is why I like the RSeat. I have used the first gen R Seat and the pedal mount isn't that strong. It will start to bend if you use a high quality pedal like the club sport V3. Friends say the 2nd gen RSeat solves that, but I haven't tried it yet. There's a lot out there: http://www.isrtv.com/category/sim-racing-chassis/

I got the Obutto Ozone but I'm setting it up once I move into my new place. Friend of mine has it and recommended it. Good entry price
radiantm3 are you still using VR? I played with my rift and its an amazing experience but i keep seeing the lines of resolution which kinda bothers me. On the new rig I will just have a single monitor to start my games and then run VR exclusively.

Nice setup, OP! I was torn between the Fanatec rig and the Humanracing chassis at one point, but since I want to add motion, the HR was the best bet. I've never used mine for anything but iRacing, until last year I went ahead with Assetto Corsa (great Sim, more fun imo, but less serious and competitive than iRacing). Recently joined the "Race Room Italia" club, too and it's fantastic so far.
Here's my current setup, waiting for next wave of the Rift to make the jump to VR, but will still run the screens for longer races I think, especially 2 hours endurance races, I think it'll be a lot more comfortable.. Human Racing GT full motion rig chassis (no motion, yet..a cool $10k more) full fiberglass shell with aluminum core to translate vibes and forces better throughout. Sparco R888 Reclining Race Seat Fanatec Clubsport V2.5 wheel base w/ BMW GT2 replica rim, and Formula Rim. Fanatec Clubsport V2 Pedals Fanatec Clubsport SQ Shifter, does Sequential and MT mode(s) DSD Button boxes, custom made to fit directly on the wheel base. 2x Buttkicker Gamer 2 transducers Sim Vibe mounting kit and software which works with iRacing, Assetto Corsa, rFactor2 and the ladder of sim software's.

A lot of great info here. Thanks everyone.
Decided to go with the following: Fanatec CS Shifter SQ Fanatec CS Pedals V3 Fanatec CSL Elite Wheel (PS4) available Nov 8 Simetik K2 Cockpit (no seat) + shifter bracket Seems like the Simetik K2 is a solid rig at a very reasonable price. I was looking at the RSeat N1 (no seat) but I read reviews that it was starting to break apart somewhere. Price is close to double as well. I've got a great full carbon Ferrari bucket off a Ferrari challenge race car that will go great with the setup. Problem is, I think I might go with a motion setup in the future and I'm not sure if the Simetik K2 can fit something like a Next Level Racing motion platform V3 that I know the Rseat N1 has a way around it. I've been contemplating the CSL Elite wheel (PS4) or getting the CS wheel base V2.5 and adding on a BMW wheel but that seems like a huge price difference. Being that this is my first rig and first attempt into a dedicated sim racing setup, I think I should take it easy and not go balls out yet. I just want to get the full experience with VR and full rig. If I love it, I'll wait for the direct drive from Fanatec. Any suggestions guys? |

Moving to a new and bigger place nov/dec and then I will setup my full rig. After that i'll see what my next move is. What I paid for my setup so far is basically what I can sell it for. I need a powerful pc for work so I don't consider that in the sim purchase for me. (Currently I7-7700k, GTX 1080)

Damn, some of you have really clean set ups. I only have a G29 and use my 34" ultrawide screen as my display, but I rarely game. I found out I'm not too keen on virtual racing and much prefer the real thing. Trying to see if I should get back into it now that PC2 and F7 is out.

If I were to cut costs anywhere, I'd say hold off on the shifter, and get a set of v2.5 pedals or even used, they really don't go bad, just the load sensors.. But don't skimp out on the wheel base, it's everything, second to a monitor setup or VR.. Just my $.02 And if you were wanting Direct Drive, you should look at SimExperience, great company to deal with. I have their SimVibe setup and it works flawlessly. Quote:
Problem with those "games" is that they don't regulate points or have effective safety ratings to keep you in similar skill levels as your competitors, like how it's done in iRacing, so it gets very frustrating when you can't finish a race due to "those guys" who like to just try and win every race, thus making it hard to be keen to get back on and try again. If you were to get into Sim Racing, for the "simulation" factor, iRacing, AC (pc), Race Room and rFactor2 are the only REAL sims out there, in my opinion.. iRacing has license classes, real sanctioned Mazda Cup (rookie class and advanced), NASCAR, IMSA, Porsche Cup, TDI Jetta Cup, Blancpain Sprint/Endurance series, and of course, Formula 1 in the MP4-30. And the track detail is best in class, bumps/cracks etc.. I know it's an expensive route, but it has the best physics engine of any sim software, and is the only way to get into higher levels of competition racing, online. You'll find some real world race drivers in there quite often, which is pretty neat. And they lap FAST, wow.. I'm only "B" licensed and I've been chipping away at things on a very part time basis for 3+ years. It's difficult to become an "A" licensed driver, but I will soon be there and will be able to compete in the pro races, with really good (clean) racers who respect each other. Racing incidents will happen, still

^ I've yet to experience anything like that. I tend to get bored of games really quickly so I just don't know if I want to invest in something that I know I won't play for too long. I wish I can try out some of these things in person before diving head first myself. Unfortunately, I don't know anybody who's into sim racing with a legit set up local to me.

From the videos out there, you can see how competitive it is, and how well it's put together. Graphics, physics, and platform is the best out there at the moment. All you really need is a PC rig, Rift, Wheel base and pedals and you're set to start off. Race seat rigs are great and all, but starts to add up $$ quickly. I was going to use my office chair and desk at first, but bit the bullet instead. No regrets, though Vid of said realism, with a real world pro driver testing in a sim race on iRacing for the first time. Once you try it, console racing seems very "game" like
