interesting how MB has turned the AMG GT into basically a 911 fighter. And been somewhat successful. Both have a base model (carrera s, gts) , convertible, road/track car (GT3 and GTR) and pure track (3RS vs GTR Pro, and 2RS vs Black Series).
I still feel front engine cars are at a disadvantage though for many reasons not related to laptimes. like view out the windshield, ride quality, turn in feel. the fastest front engine road car on the ring is ranked 10th. Chevy gave up trying to make a front engine design work and went to mid engine on the vette.

The biggest issue is visibility. That long hood and lack of rear glass definitely makes the car feel a bit claustrophobic. But I got used to it, adjusted, and was fine barreling through the canyons and LA's mountains, pushing it pretty hard, and only occasionally did I wish I had some better sightlines, mostly in the sharpest of turns. But yes, if you're going by purely track times, then rear mid-engine is still ideal. Though I'd trade some lap time for the feel and look of the AMG GT (inside and out). And it doesn't take much to make it a stupid fast car, if that's your thing. And the stock sport exhaust is better than most high-end sports cars, even better than some super cars. |

Very impressive. Although looks like MB doesn't want to confirm anything yet based on their GT3 Race Car Driver's tweets.
One of the videographers at the ring says tomorrow there will be a confirmation possibly... |

I went against a regular GT in the standing half mile. He was able to get traction off the line but I was catching up near the end. Never did catch him.

That will be huge if they take the lap record at the ring. Front engine machine taking the reigns from the GT2RS and Aventador SVJ.

My only issue with the BS is that it sounds worse than the regular cross plane V8. Kind of weird although I'm sure the new exhaust/turbo setup and particulate filters are most at fault.

Agreed, the other GT's with the cross-plane had a lot more aggression to their sound. The BS sound is a pretty big letdown, especially in comparison to previous black series.

Well, no official time yet, but the 991 GT3 and GT2RS are both several years old now. I have no doubt the new gen cars will beat this if it in fact does set a new record. If they do, props to Merc as the AMG GT is a great car!

That think is a monster, it seems huge compared to a 911. Good job MB, Porsche, the ball is in your court.

Well, in all fairness, the AMG GT is a mid-engined car, but a front mid. It is impressive to see what they ran but given the GT2RS did it a couple years ago I have no doubt Porsche will soon be beating this time with either the GT3RS or GT2/RS.

Totally plausible. My thinking here is as such. The 991 GT3RS was 24 seconds faster than the 997 GT3 RS despite what looked like minimal changes so I believe that there is a 70/30 chance the new RS will be able to shave off ~8 seconds. And just to be clear, the reason it is 8 seconds is because the 991 GT3RS time was clocked at 6:56 for the 12.9 mile circuit while the AMG GT BS clocked 6:48 on the 12.9 mile and the record time was for the 12.8 mile circuit which the 2RS clocked 6:47 (excerpt below). So really, when comparing apples to apples, the AMG is well within reach of the 992 3RS. Not sure how many others caught that especially in comparison to the 3RS’ time.
