Everything is fine except the rear. I hate the LS tail. I personally dont think anything will ever beat an s class. It has been the class leader for so long and no one so far has come close to beating its looks and technology. On a side note, I have liked how the BMW led's in the rear were straight lines instead of the ones like the current LS and even thats gone. Overall I think the current 7 is not that bad compared to this one.

For the record: the US is the single largest market for BMW - but it all depends on your definition of the term "single market". In '07 BMW Group sold 358,000 cars in the USA. In the same period, it sold 284,000 cars in Germany alone. Another 173,000 cars were sold in the UK. Add to this the hundreds of thousands of cars sold in other EU countries, and also consider that the profit margin on these cars are way bigger (a US-spec car fetches roughly half of what a customer pays for it in the EU) and you will see that your arrogance is not as well-founded as you thought. The US is an important market but it does not make or break the German car industry. (And it will remain to be an important market but China's and Russia's numbers are growing at 40-50% per annum on a meaningful base. US sales grew 7.1% vs. a worldwide growth of 7.7%. Read what you want into that.) Happy 4th! PS: I am also disappointed in how underwhelming the new 7 is. Last edited by martona; 07-04-2008 at 10:48 AM.. Reason: Added PS |

I do not know wich part is more ugly... the front one or the back...? I don t like it at all... I think the new design if applicated like this will put in danger the BMW Corp.. the design of the previus one was better... in this category S Class rules. And A8 is the only sporty alternative... a missed opportunity...

To the apparent insiders here: is the new iDrive still based on Windows "what's the hurry" CE? Or can we look forward to snazzy things like a rearview camera that doesn't take 5 seconds to kick in?

But it's true more I look it I hate it less, when I look it from the side this nose looks similar to maserati quattroporte...which I actually don't like. It remindes me of one animal but i can't figure out which one....

Like pretty much everyone on this board, and Autospies, it's taking me awhile to appreciate the design. However, this car is really beginning to grow on me. And I imagine seeing it in the flesh will make a huge difference. The road presence of these cars are amazing.
First off, I like the tail. It does remind me of a modern 8-series, and it looks interesting. This was the first part of the car that grew on me quickly. I don't see any frickin Lexus design elements anywhere. The front bumper I'm still unsure about. I like the headlights, don't mind the kidneys, but the weird bumper still doesn't look right. The side profile looks awesome to me. MUSCULAR & MODERN. Emphasizes the RWD nature of the car. The quarter profile shot is the best angle to view the car. The interior, while nothing radical, is gorgeous. Looks very comfy, and very BMW-ish. Yes, it resembles an X5, but looks much nicer and of higher quality. The only thing that really makes me upset is the deletion of amber gauges. How could they? I understand BMW wanted to match the gauges to the new iDrive menu color screen, but this sucks IMO. Finally, lets not forget we haven't seen the car in Sport Package trim, with shadowline, and bigger rims. Also, as with the current model, I have a feeling this car will look best in Jet Black and Alpine White. I HATED the current 7-series for a full year before realizing how stunning it was, so I truly think BMW challenges us to learn to appreciate its design. Once this thing is out on the roads, I have a feeling the A8 and S-class will suddenly look boring and dated. Just my two cents

You know why we are so disappointed in the new 7?????
BECAUSE BMW PRODUCED THAT StUPID TEASER THAT GOT ALL OF OUR HOPES UP FOR THE CS!!!! I bet we would like the F01 better if it weren't for that damn teaser last week.

Its starting to be more Jap-like. There isnt consistant styling, and seems to be lacking the BMWness to it.

It's good to see a relatively mature discourse on whether people like the new 7er's looks and whether BMW might prosper in the future.
Having owned pretty much every 7er design over the years and in fact two E66's, I vividly remember intial criticisms of every one of the new designs since 1986 at launch. That each new design's driving dynamics would be superior to all other vehicles in its class was a given, however, each time I knew that the vehicle will end up being considered a great desgn also (in spite of the criticsm) and usually bought one even without looking at one on road. However, this one I am not too sure of. There are things that I like, however, it is hard to get over those goofy-looking tail lamps. I can't come up with any other term to describe them but goofy. And like you said the overall design is utterly underwhelming. The only good thing I see is that there will be great deals to be had a few months after launch. I will definitely jump on it then, because I do not much care how people outside perceive the design to contribute to the ugliness of the landscape, from my perspective it will still be the most enjoyable large car to drive by far. And that's what will count for me if there is a great deal to be had along with it. BTW, if you guys don't remember, BMW had a 7k dealer discount on the E65/66 in the US within 7 months of launch (around July 2002). Here's hoping for another deal of the century like that on F01/02 based on the negative reaction of people to the styling. Quote:

My problem with the car is that they've mucked with things they shouldn't have mucked with (again, blue instrument glow) but overall it feels like they haven't done much. The E65, controversial as it was, set a number of standards. Just look at the new S class, it inherited so much from the outgoing 7. The F01 on the other hand is playing it safe - and I just don't know if that's going to be enough, if this is going to be the top of the line sedan at BMW for seven years. Hm. Maybe the cycle is going to be shorter this time around? Instead of a facelift a few years down the road, we'll see an entirely new 7? |
