It's from a year that GM cars, across the board, were panned by many as being overstyled. This kid loved them.

Even the Corvette of that year wasn't immune to being "overstyled"...with fake louvers on the hood (and not just a few) plus two seemingly meaningless chrome strips on the trunk deck. Both "features" were thankfully removed the following year.

Hint - Not GM

We've had a bunch of GM cars posted. Here's a change up.

There weren't that many dealers for this brand. Quite a history.

Actually was along with my Dad when he test drove one...a '58 Isabella. He loved the car's handling, pickup, and build but not the price. This was at a time when a 2nd car in a family were becoming more common so he was looking at all the new imports coming in (he was no longer selling Fords). I liked the Saab 93 the best but the decision went to the Fiat 1100. My mom loved it.

My dad was tired of large American cars and decided he wanted something foreign. His friend recommend that he try a Borgward. He test drove one and he loved the engineering so he bought one. He praised that car while he owned it. It's too bad Borgward had such financial difficulties. They really were very strong on the innovation side. Who knows what kind of competition they might have given Mercedes and BMW if they'd survived.

From the back they reminded me of a toad on its launches, ready to jump. Wasn't a fan.

Don't have a guess but if I was forced to come up with something...maybe something from the Italian designer, Giugiaro...he liked sharp creases and angles.

Correct continent, incorrect country. Edit: you are on right track. It is an Italian design.

New hints:

The car was marketed to compete against the 5 series.

The company that makes this car retired the nameplate and now BMW uses that very same name.

Your hints tipped it. It's French and by a company known for its over-the-top designs (and technical approach)....but haven't we left cars of the '50's to '60's?

I stand corrected. Thank you for reeling me back in. I started this thread and gave it a name. I forgot that I limited it to two decades because designed changed do wildly year-to-year in the 50s and 60s.

I will stay in my lane, so to speak, going forward.

Just to complete the conversation on the car in question, it is indeed the Citroen XM, introduced in 1989 to replace the Citroen CX as the company's flagship model.
