Integral Active Steering?

Is this a necessary option for improved handling in a 7 Series, or just a gimmick? The 2 I test drove did not have it, and seemed to handle ok, but I would spec on a build if it makes enough of a difference. Any thoughts?

I have test driven several without. Currently have IAS on my '17 and will order it again when my lease is up. Worth every penny. This is a personal thing, but my opinion is the IAS gives the 7 handling like a 5 series (had two F10s before the G12). Turn in is quicker; high speed is very solid on curves, and for parking in tight spaces, is really nice to have.

My 750 does not have the IAS. The length of the wheelbase [and car] is very noticeable without the rear-wheel steering. While it is sometimes inconvenient when making tight turns and parking, the fixed rear wheels are not a deal-killer. However, if I were to custom order this car again, it would include IAS.

It’s worthwhile to have.

Is it more expensive to maintain vehicles with IAS? Obvi it requires more tech in order to have this option.

Well, anything beyond the basics presents a potential complicated (and expensive) repair down the line. You can say that for a lot of things on these cars. I have seen nothing posted that specifically centers on risk for IAS. It has presented no issues for me, and I am comimng up on the end of a 3 year lease. I generally do not lease but did on this one in part because of the technology; I wanted to be in warranty for everything. The alternative is of course an extended warranty and most of those will cover the drivetrain, including IAS.
