Apple CarPlay Will Take Over Entire Instrument Panel
Apple just announced an update to CarPlay that will take over the entire instrument and infotainment panels. This will require cooperation with manufacturers and it looks like Porsche and Mercedes is already onboard, but BMW wasn't on the list yet. If it proves popular I'm sure BMW won't be far behind. I think this is one of the reasons why BMW is going with their Curved Display.

Yes the world could see an Apple hyperscreen equivalent such as MB offers in the S-Class. Seems like a win for consumers because Apple’s platform is accepted by many and automakers’ HMIs have been roundly criticized by many. Easy example is MB COMAND which was/is pretty bad.

Even Apple can design a proper tachometer, c'mon BMW.
Will be very interesting to see this roll out, especially since they are also promoting the integration of HVAC and car settings into CarPlay. Will probably be similar to Volvo's Google-based infotainment, although unlike Volvo will require the phone to of course be in the car.

It was honestly just a matter of time before they did this. I'm guessing this full integration is more of a test to squish the bugs for what seems like an inevitable launch to their Apple Car in the near future.
Of course, it's probably still pretty early to judge when they're planning to launch a full fledged car, if they don't scrap the idea in the meantime but i'm guessing a 2028-2030 estimate. |
